So much craziness happening this month, it's easy for what would otherwise be headline stories to get buried. This story was glossed over in the Franklin to VT thread, but I don't know if I've ever seen anything like it.

Brent Pry entered his 4th season as VT's Head Coach this year. He was summarily fired in September after the team got off to an 0-3 start. But now he'll be returning returning to VT for a 5th season, this time as Franklin's DC.

I'm well aware that Pry was an assistant to Franklin for 11 years, at Vandy & Penn State, before getting the VT job. But unless I'm mistaken, this is an unprecedented (not to mention awkward) situation. A fired head coach (in the middle of the season, no less) coming back as an assistant to the new head coach the very next year. I don't know if I could do that if I were in Pry's shoes (although I'm sure the money will help endure the awkwardness). Weird for the players & athletic department too, probably.

Am I mistaken? Has this ever happened before?

In the exact same way? I don’t think thats happened before. However, Bobby Petrino has returned to both Louisville and Arkansas. Zach Arnett took over at Mississippi State after Mike Leach’s passing, was head coach for a year, and is back as their DC.

Talking to someone I know that is a VT fan, they admitted it’s a big awkward, but Pry likes the area and doesn’t think it’s going to be as big a deal as people are making it out to be. He interviewed for other jobs, so he clearly wants to be there.

I like the move. Less money on the coach staff, put most of the money in getting players. Smart move.
