So that 3 million cap hit would be spread out over three years? That helps, but where or how do you know this?
Signing bonuses are split out equally over the length of the contract, up to a maximum of 5 years. Chancellor has $3M left over 3 years. It was scheduled for $1M this year, $1M next year, and $1M in $2017. If Chancellor was cut/traded before May 12th 2015 all $3M would have accelerated into 2015. If he moved on after May 12th $1M would count in 2015 and the remaining $2M would count in 2016.

It's only what i've learned wading through lots of internet articles.

I always heard they hit when you trade or cut a player. Like immediately.

It depends on the date. Trent Richardson was Drafted in 2012. He received a $13.3M signing bonus as part of his deal. The Browns traded Trent Richardson after Week 3 of the 2013 season. For cap purposes the Browns were responsible for his 2012 salary and 1/4 of the signing bonus in 2012. The Browns were responsible for 3/17th of his 2013 salary and 1/4 of his signing bonus in 2013. The Colts were responsible for 14/17ths of his 2013 salary. The signing bonus then accelerated and it was all on the Browns because the Browns were the team that paid it. Since he was traded after June 1st the remaining 1/2 of the signing bonus counted against the Browns in 2014.

Yes! $6.7M for a guy who had been gone since October 2013!

Not if some of it has already been paid. Then it would just be the remaining due.
My head is whirling. Seahawks traded Harvin and cap due to the signing bonus is due this year...right? But it's different if they trade Kam?

The Seahawks traded Harvin in October 2014. The Jets acquired Harvins contract which was guaranteed in 2014 and the Seahawks didn't think he was worth. For cap purposes the Seahawks paid 1 year's worth of signing bonus, ($2.4M), in 2014 and they paid Harvin however many weeks salary he was on the team in 2014. The Jets were responsible for none of the signing bonus and only the salary he earned with the Jets. Whatever signing bonus was left unaccounted for would have accelerated into the Seahawks 2015 cap figure, (looks like $7.2M).

So Harvin was traded last year and this year the Seahawks pay the full monte, all the signing bonus....and trading Kam it gets spread out over three years?

He's not getting cut. Don't think anyone feels that could actually happen. Think the Seahawks will just wait him out, don't think it will take long the big question will his heart be in it after losing this battle?

Absolutely. They want angry focused Kam, not carrying a grudge distracted Kam.

I'm sure they're going hard to get him back in soon, because unless I read it wrong, they can forgive the preseason fines, but once he starts missing game cheques, then that $ is non-refundable.

Kinda reminds me of stuff I've read about Japanese business negotiations, both sides have to find a way to 'save face.'

Kam is getting to the point of no-return with that.

I DO hope that his natural leadership and professionalism will win out if he does come back with his tail between his metaphorical legs.

No, Seattle's cap is affected only next year, just the remain $2 million for his signing bonus, and 2017 will not be affected at all. As for this year, $1 million count against the cap for his bonus - plus any amount he is actually paid. Since his 2015 salary is guaranteed, he'll be paid the rest of his salary by whatever team he goes to.

When a player is cut/traded after a certain date (always heard it was June 1, but it may have changed), their cap number for that season remains the same and the rest of their guaranteed money is accelerated to the next seasons cap, which is what happened with Harvin and why he is shown as $7.2 million in dead money.

The cut-off date used to be June 1st and it's now May 12th. Harvin was traded after June 1st in 2014 so 1/4 of the signing bonus counted in 2014 and the remaining 3/4 accelerated into 2015. Chancellor has $3M remaining over 3 years. 1/3 will count in 2015. If he is cut or traded the remaining 2/3 will accelerate into 2016. This is not a big deal because 1/3 was going to count in 2016 anyway. It's only the 1/3 $1M from 2017 that will accelerate, (not that he's going to be cut/traded). If he's not cut/traded the $3M will count $1M this year, $1M next year, and $1M in 2017.

Dang this stuff gets complicated . So now it's $1 million this year and $2 million next year, if he gets traded.

Mmmm that's way better then I originally thought. Still think this year is not the time to trade him. Let his stock go back up a bit.

No. It's exactly the same principle.

Later edit: Never mind. You've got it. I'm late in posting again.

But if they let him sit out the entire year, it's based on the opportunity cost calculation that he's worth waiting a year to have him contributing back on the field next year.

The bigger picture is irrelevant if you cut him and get nothing in return.

That's cutting off your nose to spite the ol' mug.

Yeah they won't cut him, not a chance.. if anything it would be a trade... but even that isn't happening this year at least... Even Pete said they have no interest in a trade...

Always a bad idea to sell when the stock is at the bottom. Make him come in and then see if the market improves next year.

Yeah teams would come in low right now... In the offseason of course that might change.. Hopefully he get's his butt out there before that... I'm thinking he might report next week, just a gut feeling... He knows a lot of money is at stake now...

I don't want Kam traded and the Hawks won't do it, but I wonder what kind of offers were being thrown at them.

Won't take long IMO. He's losing a lot of dough.

Til now I still don't know wtf Kam Chancellor is doing. PFT calculated the cost of his holdout now to be 1.87M. Just couple of days ago he said that him and the Hawks are 900k apart and they "should do it."

So he's willing to lose almost 2M dollars for 900k? Not exactly the brightest of holdouts here Kam.
