I think that I like this hire.

A little bit on his improvement of the Baltimore D as coordinator in 2011.

He was promoted to Defensive Coordinator on January 18, 2011, succeeding Greg Mattison who accepted a similar position at the University of Michigan.[4] That year, Pagano's defense finished 3rd in both points allowed and in yards allowed. They finished 13 in takeaways and 2nd Rush yards allowed, but Baltimore's defense has always been known for its ability to stop the run. Pagano drastically improved the pass defense going from 21st in passing yards allowed to 4th. They improved from 9th in passing touchdowns allowed to 1st in the league. The defense also came away with 17 interceptions. Pagano is known for his ability in secondary and ability to stop opposing teams pass attack.

Pagano was not a very successful HC. However, as we know from the Rod Marinelli era? That doesn't mean dick towards being a good assistant.

He was a better DC than a HC... I like the hire.

Like the hire as well - makes me think tho that Donatell, who I believe was briefly interviewed for the DC job - not sure of that - and others on the defensive staff may be Denver bound.

My memory is a bit faded on this, but I thought he was doing a fairly good job as the Colts HC until his leave of absence due to his battle with leukemia. When he eventually resumed duties, he seemed to have lost some of his mojo. But again, this is a faded recollection.

Isn't he a fucking Cover 2??
He was in Baltimore for 1 year. He had Reed, Lewis, Suggs, Ngata, etc. with a lot of depth and Baltimore was arguably a top 3 defense that year. That’s the only year he held that title before going off to Indy. I don’t think they were a heavy cover 2.

His absence due to his leukemia battle was his first season. He did not begin coaching until his 2nd. That first year with Luck when they went 11-5 was Arians as interim HC.

Good hire. Talk about landing on your feet: he's the same mold as Fangio.

You'd have to be a drooling halfwit to fuck up this defense.

You fell victim to one of the classic blunders.

If the Bears are winning in the closing minutes, and Pagano coaches the defense to STOP the opposing offense from driving the length of the field and scoring the go-ahead score, he'll be okay in my book.

It's not impossible, remember 2007-2009 and the Marc Trestman years?

*shudders*:trash:

The D was a shell of itself by the Trestman years. Urlacher gone, Briggs and Tillman hurt, front four decimated, Peppers falling off... etc...

In 09 Urlacher was hurt the entire season. There's really no excuse for this D to fall off unless they get over run with injuries.

Yeah, my take is similar. Only a big rash of injuries can derail this defense, it's THAT good. Plus it's relatively deep as well, altho we'll have to see how the offseason plays out to fully measure the depth.
