Kirk Cousins strikes again!!

This is the new NFL when it comes to contracts. Players and their agents know the value of being franchise tagged. Last year the tag paid BS 15.03 million dollars, if he were tagged again this year his salary would be, 120% of his 2020 $15M salary ($18M), or 22% more than any NFL guard not named “Brandon Scherff” has ever been paid before. As such, the starting point of any contract negotiation is now 18 million dollars.

So what happens if they tag him again this year? Well, in 2022 his price goes up 144% under a third tag to $25.92M dollars. If Washington wants Scherff for the next two years, he can force them to pay him nearly $44M ($22M AAV). Why would he accept anything less? As long as he’s here, he’s in the driver’s seat. That said, this looks like another Kirk Cousins scenario and as such, if they are not willing to pay him $18 Million this year then the best alternative is a sign and trade. (The comp is a 3rd rounder if released and Washington does very little in free agency themselves)

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but just remember, I didn't have anything to do with contract negotiations between the NFL and NFLPA. :D

There is no way in hell I would tag him again or pay him 18 million per season. Can we place the transition tag on him And match the best offer?

It's risky bnecause we already know that Washington is refusing to give him the contract that is based on amounts required by using the franchise tag. If they transition tag him here's the risk.

If another club offers a contract to a transitioned player, his original club has seven days to decide whether to match that offer or not. If the original club agrees to match, the player is forced to sign with the original club at the terms agreed to in the offer by the other club. If the original club declines to match, the player signs with the other team, and the original team is offered no compensation, as they would be if the player had received the franchise tag.

Denver is desperate to fill a season's long vacancy at guard. They would sign him to a minimum 18. something million.

BTW: the 5 year 64 million deal that Denver would offer Scherff comes to 12.5 Million per year. the signing bonus would be a minimum 26.15 million in order to reach the 18.03 tag number. It could be much more but I based these number on what was mentioned in the article.

Denver Broncos would love to sign Brandon Scherff - Bing

I don’t really get this. The 5 year, 64 million includes he signing bonus doesn’t it? That is only 13 mil per season in cap hit. To me, that is the best way to show Scherff his actual value.

I believe this is why @deanpet21 has been saying he won’t be resigned, and At tackle price I don’t know how one could justify it. Like @Stymietee said “this is how the players are using the tag to their advantage now”.

It will be more per year and signing bonus. I just used the numbers in the article as a base. The most important part is their interest and desire to get an answer at guard.

One of the reasons why I rail against doing the same things repeatedly is because time has proven the truth in doing so gives the same results.

With respect to the Brandon Scherff situation, what comes to mind is this, historically speaking. Déjà vu?

Broncos sign Mark Schlereth - UPI Archives

Mar 27, 1995 · DENVER, March 27 -- The Denver Broncos signed free agent guard Mark Schlereth Monday to a three-year contract worth $2.4 million. The 6-3, 278-pound Schlereth played the first six years of his NFL ...

They are trying to use it. The market will set his real price. Scherff won’t get more than 15 million per year with a reduction in the cap. He can test the market, then he can pick his deal. It won’t be what he is hoping for. The players are in for a rude awakening this offseason.
