Congrats he's basically Eli Manning 1.0, everything from snivelling about the Colts drafting him to his 2 SBs. Except Eli actually beat quality NE teams.

There are plenty of others on this island.

I am a huge Elway critic.

.....but comparing him to Eli is way too harsh.

If you were naming QB's you wanted on your team during Elways playing career, his name always would have been in nearly everyone's top 5 list or so.

If you were doing that during Eli's playing days, Eli wouldn't have made most people's top 7 or 8's at any point during his career.

There should be a lot of backlash against Elway simply because there are still a lot of people that will put him in the top 10 or so of all time QB's A place he should not be in. But let's not take the backlash too far and start lumping him in with guys like Eli.

The 96 Patriots who went to the Super Bowl weren't a quality team? I know the standard is pretty high in NE, but if losing the Super Bowl is the difference between a quality NE team and one that is not quality, well I guess Eli never beat a quality NE team either.

The '96 Patriots were the John Elway of Patriot teams. Very, very good but not even close to the greatest. :heh:

You have it right except for one thing, Eli wasn’t much of a baseball player.

Very Eliesque. Elway was 14-23, 175 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT.

T. Davis was the difference maker with over 150 on the ground, over 50 receiving and 2 TDs.

I think Josh Freeman has the all time passing yards record with Tampa Bay at 19,000 - 20,000 yards, around there. I wouldn't be surprised he passes that and hold all time passing yards with two franchises.

NWPATSFAN, I've never been to Gillette, do they have a ring of honor?
Part of Patriot Place has it's own Patriot HOF building.

They've retired seven numbers.

I don't recall if they have a ring of honor inside the stadium or not? Kraft is continually remodelling and adding on.

19.7k Jameis Winston is Bucs career passing leader... Testaverde #2 14.8k

Currently Brady #8 at 6.4k... at end of 2022 (without injuries) could already be #3 on list if continues at current pace.

That is what happens when you play forever
It's now a much more pass-happier league than when Elway played. And the rules didn't favor offenses back in the 80's & 90's. Imagine Marino playing in today's league. And I'm not trying to take anything away from TB12. He's had an incredible career and it won't be duplicated.
That and the changes in the game make the pass game the focus. Comparing guys from different eras is a fools errand, that's why the nut danglers love to do it.
I agree. Nobody should doubt Brady's greatness, but to compare his stats (particularly career stats) to Qbs from other eras is comparing apples and oranges. The rule changes from then to now mean that present day Qbs are barely playing the same game as the QBs in the 70's, 80's, and 90's.

Of course this is true, but seeing Brady have more TD’s than Elway and Warren Moon COMBINED is really something.

It also makes you appreciate what Fran Tarkenton was doing in the 60’s and 70’s. 342 TD passes from that era really stands out. Huge number.

It is what it is. We do this with every sport. Changes in rules, athletic ability, technology, equipment...they all play a role in our comparisons. But we'll never stop comparing athletes of different generations.

When Brady does retire, He'll have his numbers retired with NE and TB. Tampa has a Ring of Honor so he'll be on theirs.

This looks like a good thread to merge into that Tom Brady super thread.

More then likely. However, Kraft isn't into retiring numbers. He puts them in the Pats HOF. But, Brady was like a son to him so I could see it.
The Patriots have only retired seven numbers in franchise history- John Hannah (73), Gino Cappelletti (20), Mike Haynes (40), Steve Nelson (57), Bruce Armstrong (78), Jim Lee Hunt (79) and Bob Dee (89). Not knowing your age, have you ever heard of these players? It's been that long.
