I feel like the Elway is overrated camp has jumped the shark when they start comparing him to Eli Manning.
The stats are very comparable. To include SBs. Eli's numbers are actually better in many categories. If I'm not mistaken Eli even played one year less.

Could be many factors. Team, opponents, sos...
That answer remains his stats are mediocre to good at best. As stated on par with the likes of Eli and company.
Good is ok. Don't get so worked up that he wasn't great and thus many think he's over rated.
Why do you think it changed? Do you think it was due to his team getting better? His opponents getting worse? His strength of schedule changing? What do you think is the reason?

He started in 231 games and had 226 INTs. 300 TDs. One year over 4k yards.

It's ok to be just a good player. Elway was. He was not great.

Some interesting stats. 4,000 yard passers.

-Favre had 5 in 20 years ('95, '98, '99, '04, '07' 09)

-Marino had 6 in 17 years ('84, '85, '86, '88, '92, '94)

-AR12 has 5 in 14 years as a starter ('08, '09, '11, '12, '14)

-Dan Fouts had 3 in 15 years ('79, '80, '81)

-Steve Young had 2 in 9 years as a starter ('93, '98)

-Montana had none

Also you have to take into consideration how pass-happy the league is today compared to the 80's & 90's. The rules now favor the offense. They didn't back then.

As stated it was more likely a combination of all. At different times.

You're missing the point. No one is denying he was good.

Do you think Eli was great?

Do you think Eli was over rated?

Time to talk some shit. fuck meeeechegan!!!

Alotta those W's were a direct result of his team getting caught illegally videotaping opponents twice, fined twice and lost draft picks. How many games does he really win without that? And what NFLer in his right mind willingly takes a 4 game suspension for destroying his cell phone and not cooperating? Those aren't the actions of someone that has nothing to hide.

Brady is definitely cheating when he elects for FA and picks the most stacked non-QB roster available, and works dark magic to acquire Gronk and AB for vastly below market rates. Cheating I say!

So some of these guys in the same era had multiple 4k seasons. Most are not considered great. They are considered good to very good. Just like Elway.

So you either missed or ignored the part where I mentioned more than once I was being sarcastic. Too funny. I knew there would be one Pats fan out there that took my sarcastic comment seriously. And thank you for that. It's hilarious.

Nope. Maybe you missed it, so here it is again>

Why did Elway, at age 33, after 10 years in the league, see a huge spike in all his numbers that stayed pretty consistent for the rest of his career?
He had a good year. Name 1 QB that didn't have 1 year that was better than the rest?

Nope, like I said Elway was good. Let's focus on him and stop moving the goal posts. This was about one QB being over rated or not.

I'm not surprised a Browns fan would have such an opinion on Elway.
It has nothing to do with the Browns and has everything to do with Elway. He was carried by TD and that defense. Very overrated, most will agree with me

I think just the rules alone, the no contact rule against DB’s, the protection of QB’s today he would have put up better numbers no question… The thing about Elway, he carried some Bronco’s teams that really had no business even making it to the the Super Bowl, he carried them … Once he was given a good running game and better defense he got it done back to back …I liked the guy, saw the Broncos twice a year back in the day when Seattle was in the AFC West, he was a pain, always made the Broncos competitive … The guy had one helluva arm, threw the ball effin fast …
Elway was an athlete and tough SOB and early in his career he did carry some teams but the fact is he was the guy that disappeared for 3 1/2 quarters while the defense and TD carried the team and have one good drive "to win the game" and he was hero. Great with his legs, strong arm but a very inconsistent and inaccurate arm. His low completion pct is mind-boggling. He was a very good QB, without those rings he would not be a HOF'r. Thanks to those stout defenses and TD. TD was a beast.

You forget the suspension for cheating.

Since you must have missed it the first time, I'll rewrite it - it wasn't just one good year. The final 6 seasons of his career were all REMARKABLY better than the first 10. So why is that? Did he just suddenly figure out how to be a good qb in the NFL after 10 season?

Actually I'm afraid that you are missing the point. You're so obsessed with comparing Elway to Eli that can't see the point I'm driving at. The final 6 seasons of his career, Elway was a remarkably better qb statistically. So why is that? Did it just take him 10 years to figure out how to be a qb in the NFL?

Based on this post I have to assume you aren't actually old enough to have watched Elway play early in his career.

Maybe Elway didn't disappear for 3 1/2 quarters, maybe Dan Reeves wouldn't let him play until late in the game, at which point he turned it over to Elway and said "go win it now." Could that be a possibility?
