Lets see if he can find that 30 goal touch again, if he does its a steal.

Nice trade, St. Louis gets a 2nd for a guy who was probably gone July 1rst anyways and has lost his scoring touch over the last few years, and Buffalo gets a guy who can potentially put the puck in the net.

scratch that, he's got another year at $4M.

Boyes can be streaky, but for a 2nd round pick, I like the move by the Sabres...

The Sabres will make a huge deal by the trade deadline. (well at least a huge deal by Sabres standards considering it's been 8 years since they actually did anything by the trade deadline)

This is not a great deal. Unlike a previous poster said HE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN GONE JULY 1st anyways. He is under contract next year for 4 million. Looks like we're gonna get rid of a tallented underachiever whose overpaid in the off season, Connolly, and pick up a new one, Boyes. Bad move for the Sabres IMO. Kills our cap for next year.

I think this is an OK move, but not the blockbuster we've been waiting for in Buffalo.

$4M is a bit high for a guy struggling to put the puck in the net, but it's obvious that he has that potential and can maybe re-ignite a bit in a different setting. If not, it's only for one more year, so it's not a huge issue, IMO.

I assume though that this means someone is headed out the door today (rumors are pointing to Connolly) or another guy or two hits the waiver wire, because the Sabres don't really have room up front otherwise.

With Boyes having 41 points, he now has the 2nd most points on the Sabres behind Vanek.

Even if he gives us that type of production, it will be well worth a 2nd round pick IMO. I think he's going on a line with Connolly which might just benefit both of them?

As I said in a previous post, Connolly and Boyes production numbers from last season and this season are identical, I'm just not happy to be taking on a 4 million contract hit right when connolly is gonna be coming of the books. I mean would you rather spend 4 million on a player like Boyes, or bank it and spend it on a FA?

Sabres have the room under the cap to do something like this, and the fact that they went out and got someone at the trade deadline is a positive sign of things to come in the future.

The Sabres are going to shed some money by getting rid of a few players after this season, and the cap is going to go up from what I hear. Plenty of room left for the Sabres to pick up someone that's a FA.

We need more than just someONE. We really do have alot of cap room next year, 21 million if the cap raises to the projected 62 million, but we have 11 players to sign to fill up our roster with that 21 million, so we really don't have alot of cap room for big signings.

Assuming Gerbe, Sekera, Butler, and Weber agree to Qualifying Offers, that amounts to 3.575 million of that 21 million and leaves you with 7 players to sign with 17.4 million of cap space.

You and I both know that Stafford is going to goto arbitration and be awared somewhere in the 3.5-4 million range with the production he put out this year, so that leaves you with about 13 million to sign 4 forwards, a d-man, and a backup goalie, A REAL BACKUP GOALIE PLEASE!!!

I say we bring Kassian up to try out as one of the forwards, Imagine the line of Gaustad centering Kaleta and Kassian, WICKED CHECKING LINE. I also think we should bring up Gragnani. Those 2 will cost us about 1.5 million assuming Gragnani accepts a QO, leaving us with 3 forwards and a backup goalie to sign with 11.5 million.

Now realize that the first 2 forward lines are full, as well as the 4th in this scenario. So we are really looking for 3rd line players and a good backup. But also realize, that this basically leaves you with the same team we have this year. I guess I was just looking for more of a transformation.....

Overall getting Boyes for a 2nd round pick is an acceptable risk for the Sabres, and one that they can afford to make at this point.

If Boyes can be a 50+ point scorer next season, then it will have been well worth it for 4 mil.

The only thing we can do is hope and wait just like any other season.

I like the move and reading this quote I get the impression the only reason Connolly is still here is because of the Roy injury.

"Keeping Tim Connolly will help our hockey club down the middle," Regier said. "With the loss of Derek Roy, it was important for us to keep him. I think it's a signal not only to Tim but to his teammates that this wasn't about selling off. This was about adding to the team, and we're hopeful that it pays off down the stretch run and in the playoffs."

Interesting quote from Tom Vanek in the same article.

"What else can you ask for than an owner who wants to really win?" left wing Thomas Vanek said. "For us, it's great. Now we just have to rise up to it."

Boyes at 4 plus million for next year is steep. He's only got 12 goals this year. Hopefully he'll find his scoring touch the rest of the season. It would certainly help the Sabres & my fantasy team.

The price tag on deadline day was very steep. I think a lot of teams simply said no & I don't blame them. Garth Snow wanted a 2nd round pick each for Martinek & Konopka. Don't get me wrong I would have applauded him if he were to get what he was asking for. However the price was highway robbery.

Doing a bit of math, that's a better $/G average than some of our other guys though:
Boyes: $4M/12 goals = $333,333.33
Connolly: $4.5M/8 goals = $562,500
Hecht: $3.525M/10 goals = $352,500

He's also got 41 total points, which puts him at second on the team currently (behind Vanek and his $7.1M), and his 29 assists ties him for the team lead (also with Vanek).

By Sabres standards, he's a veritable bargain :L

Considering Connolly's 4.5 comes off the books at the end of the season I guess the Sabres have found his replacement money wise.

For sure. The $4M seems high, but given that we're only on the hook for one year and the guy has shown in the past that he can be a 40+ goal scorer, I think it was an OK move to give him a chance in Buffalo.

Contrast that to Connolly who has never broken 20 in his career.

What I won't be happy with is if he has another ~15 goal season next year (assuming he doesn't explode over the rest of this season) and they re-sign him for similar $

I think Boyes is a stop gap player for next season to give Kassian 1 year in the AHL. Then look out.
