Blake Bortles Still Offers the Promise of Hope but the Reality of a Bust

"He is a really good guy," the scout added. "I've met him and talked to him. I know he tries. He's not lazy. He's just overwhelmed. You can see it on film. He gets confused pretty easily by (defensive) looks that aren't all that complicated. That's why his mechanics are a problem. He gets panicked by defenses and the rush and falls back on bad habits."

He's had one bad year. In 2015, he was a top 10 QB in TDs, yards and yards per game. He's gotta stop throwing so many INTs and his O-line needs to be better about blocking for him because he was the most sacked QB in 2015. 2016 was just a bad year. He'll bounce back.

thats due to the league not the player

That's arguable. The Jags didn't have a running game last year to they relied too much on Bortles' arm to make plays. Now that he has hope in the backfield, Bortles won't be called on as much. Relying solely on a QBs arm when he's not THAT good to begin with is dangerous. They tried with Chris Ivory but that didn't help. Drafting Leonard Fournette was more for Blake than anyone else honestly. I think he gets back to his 2015 form, just hope it's with less INTs and sacks.

I haven't followed him closely but it seems that he puts up tons of stats in the 2nd half in which the Jags are down by 21+ points. They are down by those scores largely in part of BB's poor first half play. From what I've seen, he is mechanically poor....bad footwork/throwing from awkward angles and it leads to terrible throws. That can be corrected, but I'm not sure about the padding stats in garbage time issue.

He’s only in his fourth season and you don’t throw for more than 4,000 yards and 35 touchdown passes like he did in 2015 by accident. He has the ability to be a good starting quarterback in the NFL if he cleans up his mechanics, cuts down on interceptions, becomes more accurate and makes quicker and better decisions. He also needs his O-line to step it up, the running game to get developed and I think they have that with Fournette, and the defense needs to actually stop opposing offenses and give Bortles more confidence in the team as a whole. Last year, the Jags were supposed to light it up with Wins but they ended up doing a bunch of the same shit. The team as a whole need to get it together, including Bortles. But by no means is he a bust because of 1 bad year after a solid year.

its a passing league. dan marino was the leader forever yards in a season. if you go to 4900 yards, guys like stafford (twice) kirk cousins, eli effing manning, matt ryan and big ben have all gone over 4900+ yards since.

matt schaub once threw for nearly 4800 yards. all you need to know...

Wouldn't want him on my team...
Pretty much this.

I think he could be good but problems from the neck up this late into his career probably means that he is done by week 10. Even Nick Foles is able to look decent every now and then but if you cant read defenses after year 1 then your career is basically over with that team.

And if reading defenses after year 4 still has you skittish, it's time to cash in on whatever that major was in college.

I would give him one more season to silence his critics, by putting up good numbers and wins for his team.

He's a decent QB with a less than average team and things to work on. In 2015, he was 3rd in the AFC in yards, 2nd in TDs, 5th in yards per game. But also the most sacked, most intercepted and least accurate. He's not a bust, he just had a bad year last year and has some mechanics to work on. He's statistically done things Derek Carr has yet to do when it comes to throwing for 4,000 yards, 35 TDs, accuracy is close to equal, I think Carr is ahead by 1.5%. But his team is not as good as the Raiders.

You should really go back and look at the 2015 game logs. The amount of TDs and yards he compiled in the final quarter, or even final minutes, of games in which the Jags were down by multiple scores is pretty funny. I was living in Jacksonville that year, I remember it well.

Game Situational Stats:
Trailing, < 2 min to go:
14-22 210 yards 4 TDs 1 INT 115.5 QBR 3 sacks
Trailing, < 4 min to go: 42-64 586 yards 7 TDs 3 INTs 111.8 QBR 7 sacks

Quarter Breakdown:
1st Qtr:
70-118 891 yards 2 TDs 1 INT 85.1 QBR
2nd Qtr: 99-170 1116 yards 10 TDs 9 INTs 75.5 QBR
3rd Qtr: 76-122 969 yards 9 TDs 1 INT 108.3 QBR
4th Qtr: 111-193 1442 yards 14 TDs 7 INTs 90.2 QBR

4th quarter is where he gets the most of his yardage, but to say it's a significant difference is not accurate. Same with TDs. Only 796 yards and 11 TDs in these games where they are trailing in the 4th with less than 4 minutes on the clock. I tend to disagree with the bulk of his stats being garbage stats. I'm not arguing he's a top 10, top 15 QB, but 2016 was just a bad year. QBs have bad years. He's not as bad as 2016 would paint him out to be.
