Pens ink Steve MacIntyre...

The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed forward Steve MacIntyre to a one-year contract, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.

MacIntyre’s contract is a two-way deal worth $600,000 at the NHL level.

MacIntyre, 6-foot-5, 250 pounds, spent the 2010-11 season with the Edmonton Oilers, collecting one assist and 93 penalty minutes in 34 games. Both his games played and penalty minute totals were NHL career highs for the 30-year-old forward

He's a super heavyweight...

Nothing says "We, as a league, must do a better job of protecting the integrity of the game and the safety of our players" like hiring a 1A, 93 PIM guy after finishing second as a team in PIMs.

Just for those games with the Isles. ;)

I think you guys should reconsider, he only played in 34 games this year. Calculated out to a full season, he could have 2 assists.

I think I see the strategy here...Matt Cooke stirs it up, Big Mac cleans it up which leaves plenty of room for El Sid to operate.

Ole.

If it was a2 year contract he could take the spot for the next Penguin to get injured in a Winter Classic

The funny thing is that he will score a goal in a pre-season game and every idiotic, johnny come lately pens fan will pencil him in on sid's wing ala Brett Sterling, Ryan Craig, Mike Comrie etc...

If I went to a Pens preseason game and saw him score a goal, I'd be pissed - he should be chucking knuckles and bullying rookies.

McIntyre was signed to play 6 times next season. All against the Islanders.:D:

I don't really...mind this? I guess? It's 2-way, and really cheap. No harm done. But with the rough and tumble guys we have (not heavyweights, but they're actual hockey players that can fight ala Engo, Asham, and plenty of others not afraid to drop 'em), it's not a need. Bloggers cited Jody Shelley as a reason to have him. I just don't see the point of an enforcer anymore. Stop facilitating the need for them, let them fall into oblivion.

The Pens want revenge against the Isles & possibly the teams that hit Crosby in the head. The Caps being one. When Crosby comes back they want him protected. I actually think it's a solid move for the Penguins. Like you said he isn't going to cost them much.

I'm not sure that the Isles are really on the radar, as we all know the refs are going to be pretty strict the next time that they play.

I also agree that goons aren't needed for this club. If he stays in the AHL, I'm fine with it. If he's called up for a divisional game, as in the most important games, then I'll be a little frustrated.

I am not surprised by this move and I do not mind it. Weeks ago in a thread i stated I would not be surprised to see Goddard resigned... my thinking, as much as I wanted Rupp, I thought he would leave, and the same with Talbot. Losing those two I knew Shero would be after a physical presence... I didn't want goddard, (one way contact) but wouldn't have been surprised if the signed him... glad they went this route with a two-way contract... (godddard is with the stars, fyi)

Steckel fought twice.

The hit was clearly unintentional.

Matt Cooke tried to break Ovie's leg.

Letang broke Backstrom's thumb.

How much more revenge could the Pens want on the Caps.

Hell, Steckel isn't even there anymore.

Isles aren't even on the Pens radar (no roster moves with the isles in mind), and the Caps, we get our revenge in the playoffs.

I don't really remember the Penguins making any moves with one opponent in mind. I know there was a lot of talk about Pronger being brought in to counter Crosby/Ovechkin, but that move still helped in more areas than just in the "shutdown" role.
