This should be an exciting conference this year...I'd say OK State, Kansas and Iowa State are all legitimate final four contenders this year...the race for the crown in this league will be top heavy no doubt. Other good story lines are of course Andrew Wiggins and Joel Embiid making an impact as Freshmen, but Oklahoma has a quality freshman of their own in G Jordan Woodward. Melvin Ejim and DeAndre Kane are the stars on an underrated Iowa State team. Oklahoma has looked decent early, as has Texas, but do they have what it takes to compete with the cream of the crop? Probably not.

Looks like Isaiah Taylor is the best PG in the Big 12 currently and one of the best in the country. Rick Barnes definitely deserves COY after we were predicted to finish 9th in the conference. Everybody wanted Barnes fired last year, including me. I guess he just needed to get rid of all the trash from last year's team. Hopefully he'll stay away from the one and doners from here on out. They really are worthless......

BOOK 'EM POKES!

ESPN today:

This is another troubling development for an
Oklahoma State squad that looked like a potential
Big 12 champ and Final Four contender entering the
season.
The No. 19 Pokes have lost three of their past four
games. They are three games behind first-place
Kansas in the Big 12 as they prepare to face No. 16
Iowa State on Monday night in Stillwater (9 p.m. ET,
ESPN).
In late December, center Michael Cobbins suffered a
season-ending Achilles injury. Star Marcus Smart is
just 13-for-53 (25 percent) from the field in the
team's past four games. And now Clark is no longer
a member of the team.

from comments at the Tulsa World article:
"A once promising season is beginning to get away from the Pokes once Cobbins got hurt. They need a win desperately to stop the bleeding."

OSU beat writer for The Oklahoman:
"(losing Clark) is a further blow to OSU’s depth, which has already taken a hit with the loss of starting forward Michael Cobbins for the season to injury."

NBC Sports:
"Clark has been one of two reserve guards in the Oklahoma State rotation (Phil Forte III being the other)... Clark played just 11 minutes on Saturday in the Cowboys’ 76-70 loss to Baylor, tallying one point, one rebound and one assists."

comment from a Kansas fan: "tough to lose your back up PG in Feb." This season, Clark averaged 5.3 points and 2.7 assists in 16 games (16.0 minutes per game) as the Cowboys’ backup point guard.

"the Big 12 is arguably the best conference in the nation"

-Brian Hamilton, college basketball writer for Sports Illustrated in his article on Oklahoma State today (he joined SI a month ago after being with the Chicago Tribune since 2005. He went to Northwestern were he was the beat writer for the basketball team for the school paper)

SI:

"Tonight is Eddie Sutton Night at Oklahoma State, a remembrance of a career and a life and some long ago good times. And if there was ever a time for the program to plunge into the warm sand of a happy past, it is now, in a problematic present."

(Oklahoma State students have begun referring to their temporary towns as "Camp Sutton", in honor of retired head coach Eddie Sutton. Tents are pitched in hopes of securing floor seats in the student sections. In 2007, the camp lasted from the second Oklahoma State Big 12 home game to the last Big 12 home game of the season. Students lived under over 1,700 square feet of tarps duct taped and tied together, nicknamed the Thunderdome. It was occupied every day except during the games for the entire campout.)

SI:

The Cowboys, considered a prime contender in the rugged Big 12 and just last week a top 10 outfit, have lost three of four games.

In the three-losses-in-four-games skein, sophomore guard (and preseason All-American and Player of the Year candidate), Marcus Smart is a ghastly 13-of-52 from the floor, missing 25 of 28 attempts from three-point range.

With another top 25 team in Iowa State visiting today, suddenly Oklahoma State (16-5, 4-4 Big 12) seems like a team with its brakes locked as it fishtails off course.

First come the Cyclones today and then three of four games on the road, a stretch including games against Texas and Oklahoma. The season ends with Kansas, Kansas State and then a road trip to Iowa State.

It’s deep-breath time for Oklahoma State. With Clark gone, the Cowboys are down a headache but also another rotation player, with no real proven commodities beyond the remaining top six. Nine games into the Big 12, the Cowboys shouldn’t be in crisis mode.

Fred Hoiberg, whose Iowa State team has lost four of six, though it is coming off a revitalizing home win over Oklahoma, said:
“You look at the schedule we’ve played and the four losses we had this year, those are four great teams. There’s no need to panic. Our conference is unbelievable.”

“Let’s understand,” Bill Self said Monday, “14-4, 13-5 would be an unbelievable record in this league.”

the two are big rivals in wrestling too. they were the first two wrestling programs in NCAA history to record one thousand dual victories. OSU wrestling is 34-time NCAA Tournament Champions, Iowa State wresting is 8-time NCAA Tournament Champions

wrasslin, now that's a hard sport. Not sure how those guys do it. In off-season football, sometimes coaches would have us wrestle. Hell with that, too damn hard. I give anyone who does it my respect.
