I'd always sort of dismissed the Grateful Dead as they're fine.. but nothing special. Their heyday was before my time of really getting into music and I never really explored them, though I'd heard the claims of their fans about their live shows.
But I finally listened to this the other night and I'm now a believer. Some of these jams are just amazing.. as good as any jazz I've ever heard and I own a lot of good jazz.

Much of the Dead's live stuff is awesome....and there's tons of it.
So many variations through the years. I've been a fan since the early 70's.
I too own a lot of good live jazz.
One of my favorite albums is Wes Montgomery "Full House"
If you're unfamiliar with it...I highly recommend it.
He's with Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, Jimmy Cobb & Johnny Griffin.
In a word: Fantastic!
