Excellent signing at a position of need. Cook among the best at tackling rate - should be an immediate upgrade.

Now, go get two more defensive starters and we'll be in much better shape for the draft.

I don't know much about Cook, but I like the sound of that.

A lot of players being snatched already.

Missed tackles last year. Stone:26, Cook 4. One less missed tackle per game!

And now we've added Mafe..... Word out that we are also in the sweepstakes for Devin Lloyd. I don't believe we'll get Lloyd, but if we did, the Bengals would have completed their objective on day 1 of free agency.

Cook was a guy high on my list. Cross and Cook were 1a, 1B.

This was a very good get. Dude has done nothing but produce.

Lloyd to Carolina, but they paid for that. Not sure the Bengals are in the market to pay a LB that much. Especially as they continue to kick tires on finding a DT/3T. Could they pull the trade with Philly? I doubt it. It would cost them the 10th pick plus another hefty contract. Worth it? Maybe...1 pick, for verified NFL production...still young...but I don't see that happening.

At this point, sign Chenal. He upgrades you immediately and you still are looking at improvements from Knight and Carter. There would still be some money to then add some value FA along the defensive line. If you get all of that done, you head into the draft with an open draft board.... Which might lead to us using some draft capital to select OBJs eventual replacement.

Lloyd got signed for only $15 million per season for 3 years. That was a bargain. We should have tried harder. We let Hendrickson leave, that saved $30 million right there. Cook and Lloyd would have been 30 million. We failed at that one. Do like Cook though.

Didn't "save" 30M...he wasn't on the books.

Could be how the contract was structured. Maybe he wanted more guarantees. Cook and Mafe both took more cash upfront in lieu of guarantees past year 1 - though the dead cap virtually locks the contract into no less than 2 years.

So far...there was a major need for a DE, S, LB, and DT. Chances of hitting on all 4 were always going to be slim...they got 2 so far, and if they can find a decent LB (Chenal, maybe) then getting 3 of the 4 is pretty darn good (or if they find a DT they like).

So far - Bengals said they were going to be aggressive - and they got 2 of the better players at each of their respective positions. I'll take that.

Reader and Chanel should be their remaining targets. They can do this if they want to. It would remake the defense in a single year, with our 1st round pick likely being a defensive player or OT. If this is their free agency period, then I can see them going after CB to help offset the loss on the outside next year with Hill.

$20 mill on Boye
$13.5 mill on Cook ($18 million first year, so he gets cheaper next year)
Chanel might be around 12 to 14 million a year?
Reader might be 8 mill a year

That would be around $50 million, with plenty of room to resign Turner at least on a multi-year deal and then the draft.

My sense is that they were not giving guarantees into second year and that's what Lloyd and his agent wanted. I think this behavior generally has much more to do with the agents as guarantees are trophies on their walls. It's fine that we didn't get him, but the response can't be to turtle up and quit now. There are still two linebackers that can be signed for multiple years and really help this young D. Go get one. And then spend some money to create depth at a few more positions.

Agreed that we are off to a good start - But for now, it's incomplete. We know they have more money they are willing to spend (if they truly were in the Lloyd derby)..... I just hope they spend it before the pool gets shallow.

I saw this morning that Bengals FA target Leo Chenal is basically the same age as second year player Demetrius Knight.

Agreed...players, and agents, get caught up on the guaranteed portion - and I do understand it - but when you sign a contract like the Bengals have handed out, and you know their history of not taking on big dead money moves...that 2nd year is all but guaranteed. Sure, there's a chance...but in reality, if any of those guys got cut after 1 year, they are very, very likely getting another contract outside of some catastrophic injury and even in that case, insurance kicks in for the team to cover the contract (IIRC).

Welp, apparently there was no “pivot” after striking out on Devin Lloyd.

Leo Chanal and Kaden Elliss both signing elsewhere.

Bengals front office sat on their hands on Day 2. And here we go to the draft again with glaring holes at LB and IDL. Although IDL might still be addressed…I suspect we will see Knight and Carter out there again. Unless Sonny Styles falls in their lap.

This is why we shouldn’t be beating our chests and ready to give Duke Tobin GM of the Year for signing one good starting safety and replacing Trey H with a career backup/projection player in Boye Mafe.

I like the signings. But this is a start. Not “all in”. No where close to mission accomplished.

Side note: don’t know if the Bengals were ever in on these other LBs…but how much you wanna bet Lloyd would’ve signed here but Katie didn’t want to guarantee year 2? This has the familiar stench all over it..

I get what you are saying, but you can't force someone to sign, and the Bengals don't offer 2nd year guarantees. We can debate about that until the cows come home, but it's how they do business. They do cash up front in lieu of 2nd year guarantees. Which, honestly, is the same thing because cutting a player like that in year 2 would trigger a massive dead-cap hit, which we all know the Bengals also don't do...so...in effect, it's always at least a 2 year deal with a ton of cash up front.

Problem is - Agents and players like that word "Guarantee" as it sticks out...but in the long run, guys on 3-4 year deals make more money under the Bengals' structure than not.

You aren’t wrong, and I’m not shooting the messenger here. But this explanation is the exact same rationale used by the Brown family inner circle for decades that believe their processes are infallible and everyone else is wrong.

Whether or not cash up front in lieu of guarantees is “the same thing” or not is irrelevant. 31 other teams offer guarantees after year 2. Agents and players look for it. It’s the nature of the collective business. Only the Bengals (per usual) refuse to operate completely with their counterparts in this regard, and it continues to cost them talent.

The proof is in the pudding. The Bengals swapped out two starters on a league worst defense and called it a day. They missed the window to truly raise the floor of the defense and open up the draft for BPA. They will reach for need in the draft yet again. And they will field the league’s worst LB core, yet again.

They continue to pinch pennies saving for a future that will never materialize. They are unserious.

Oh, we don't disagree. The Bengals need to find a way to do business in the modern NFL with contracts. It's that simple. As every other team has moved to 2nd year guarantees...they are going to struggle to land premier guys consistently without offering this.

Bengals are a wholly unserious franchise. Have been since Paul died.

I also think this used to make sense when the Bengals honored contracts. For years they would hang onto guys with high salaries because they signed the deal. I remember when they were paying Leon Hall an absurd amount of money to limp around on two bum heels. But this hasn't been true for a long time. We cut Rankins after one year. We cut Cappa before his final year of his deal. We forced Mixon to restructure. We forced Geno Stone to restructure after one year. The Bengals are saying - we'll pay you in year one and probably in year two. Just trust us..... But they aren't trustworthy.
