I will think different if he ends up stealing 50 bags with full time playing time, but, right now, he is just another glove first punch and judy guy to me.

Punch and judy guys can be pretty valuable players too. Brett Gardner's a damn good player (granted his power numbers this year were a lot closer to league average than in his previous years). And that Brett Butler guy was pretty good too.

Gentry had a .367 OBP in 2012 and .373 in 2013. He also rates as a plus defender.

Even if he wasn't a threat on the basepaths, he'd be a valuable player.

If you are reading that I do not think he is valuable, then, my bad. I just keep getting hung up on the word/term significant, and, he just ain't it in my book.

To me, a player being significant means I would want him on my fantasy team. And, lacking the 50 stolen bases I mentioned before, he just is not a guy I would want.

Good is fine, but great is better.

The ultimate punch and judy guy is Ben Revere - he's never hit a homerun in his career

The best/worst I could find from the modern era is a guy named Tom Oliver, who played from 1930-1933, getting 1931 ab's without a homer. There is a guy way worse, with 2335 a.b's, but that was pre-1900.

Just looked on Fangraphs...

Bill Holbert had 2396 PA without a home run
Dave Eggler had 2594 PA
Mike McGreary had 2507 PA

Davy Force had 4407 PA with one home run.

Seems like they gave up a bit for Gentry, but they did just trade Seth Smith for Luke Gregerson.

Well done. Their bullpen just got leaps and bounds better today.

How many GMs are gutsy enough to trade with division rivals?

My guess is that usually when you see it, at least one of the team is doing a fire sale or in the cellar (ie - Marlins trading Delgado to the Mets, Mets and Braves swapping Church/Francouer, etc). I can't remember any notable examples when both teams are expecting to compete though...
