Avatar 2, the sequel to what was then the highest grossing film of all time, is scheduled to be released on Friday, December 17, 2021 Wednesday, December 16, 2022. James Cameron returns to direct, and most of the main cast is also returning.

I assume this movie will essentially require a 3D viewing. Watching the first one in non-3D would have been pointless.

Unfortunately, due to medical issues, I can’t watch movies in 3D anymore without getting a headache. Not sure it will be worth watching in 2D.

My kids were too young to have seen the first Avatar in theaters in 3D, and I remembered how cool it was. So we just took my kids and my nephews to imax 3D showing of the first one. Still enjoyable even having seen the movie a number of times. The kids all liked the 3D effects too.

At the end they had 4-5 minute clip of Avatar 2 in full 3D. No semblance of a plot was shown, not even a hint that a plot exists, but the visuals were a step above the original even. I'll definitely be going to see the new one(s) but only if I can go to an actual imax theater and see it in 3D. Probably not worth seeing in non 3d or at a home theater.

So... another underperformer for Disney in this cursed year? Projections moving from a 200M+ opening weekend to "just" 130M. Internationally it seems to be doing much better.

According to James Cameron, this movie needs to make close 2B worldwide just to break even.
