Former UT coach Augie Garrido dies at age 79

AUSTIN (KXAN) - Former University of Texas at Austin baseball coach Augie Garrido has died at the age of 79.

The university announced he passed away early Thursday morning. Garrido was the coach with the most wins in NCAA baseball history. He was also a five-time national champion, winning two of them while with the Longhorns.

Garrido had been in the hospital following a stroke, according to Longhorns baseball. During the March 13 Longhorns baseball game against Arkansas, a sign on a pole said "Augie, get well soon. Hook 'Em."

Soggy Burrito would never schedule Wichita State because he was in direct competition with Gene Stephenson for "winningest baseball coach in history". He died happy knowing he was #1. We gave him a little hand too by firing Shocker Hall-of-Famer Gene Stephenson 4 years ago... (long story).

Funny, I remember him as the guy who led Cal State Fullerton to baseball dominance. Texas seems like an afterthought.
