I thought this was interesting. Spurrier has been pushing this for a while, but it also cites Mack Brown and Les Miles. The guy's not afraid to stir the pot:

If I were a player, I’d start thinking about forming a union. The threat of a strike just before the national semifinals might do wonders for their bargaining power.

I wonder if that would spur 'right-to-play' legislation.

Players need to be paid. I don't get why people oppose it. If it's to protect "amateurism" that ship sailed a long time ago.

Yeah, and from the article:

The idea of the true student-athlete is antiquated. In many cases, college football at major programs has become nothing more than a minicamp for the NFL. Paying the players a fair wage might be a way to keep everyone honest and keep kids away from the agents and runners who have infested campuses across the country.

It's usually a small amount of money that causes these violations in the first place. At USC, for example, Wes Saunders was getting an artificially low rate for living at the Whitney Hotel. I think he ended up paying back like 1500 bucks or something. He also was with the guy Austin from UNC, when an agent (or consultant, whatever he calls himself) put them up in a hotel and threw some type of party for them. At UF, Sharrif Floyd was taking gift cards from some similar type of actor (who also had some connection with Damiere Byrd, who signed with us), for like 2 grand. And all of these guys were NFL calibre - Austin was a projected 1st Rounder, Saunders was rated top TE prospect before the season, and Floyd was the #1 recruit in the country 2 years ago (and will play NFL). So the amounts we're talking about pale in comparison to their future earning power. A stipend would reduce these types of incidents, imo.

How much does the Average College Student owe in Money after the graduate?

Forget the fact most the moron players major in some BS field.

ALL of them are given a chance to leave college with NO DEBT and a Ability to make money in a decent job. Something NO OTHER STUDENT can do, unless mommy and daddy pay...

Now you want to reward them even more, at the expense of the average student (who do you think will pay the Difference???).

They also get free food.

If stupid Reporters start trying to force their ideals unto the schools the schools will pass off every cent unto the Students. Not that I really care, its kinda good knowing every person younger than me has to work 2x as hard as me to get where I am...

Or they COULD pay players, then make the players pay the school for all the Free crap they are getting.

No matter what, Paying college football players (after all NO ONE is talking about paying the Swimming team...............) will end up screwing people more than the current system.

If you play the football team, you have to pay the badminton team. That may work at Texas or USC but it could bankrupt Southern Miss and Ohio.

Paying football may be fine as their amateur status is useless anyway, but what about the Olympic sports?

They get a free education, free housing, free food, they already get a small amount of money and get to broadcast their skills to pro scouts. No one forces them to play college sports, football players could join the Arena League or the CFL if they want to get paid right away.

And if you pay them, you should be able to drop them for not producing., for not fitting into team dynamics, etc.

The money should be going where it already is going... to the other sports that aren't producing profits and into the school's general fund.

You make a great point.

Not only do they get 2 Careers for Free. They get free Publicity so they can earn even more money in football.

Fact is if a Kid goes to USC, Alabama, Oklahoma, Michigan they are a lot more likely to be draft in the NFL because of the Free Pub they get.

Would a Kid going to USC not be paid as much as a Kid going to Kent State because by simply going to USC you will earn more money than a kid at Kent State. Its even bigger for a school like Texas vs Rice...

LMAO!

To be fair no actual Students are talking this crap, just some wannbe activist...

I think they are hoping someone gets all bent out of shape about the exploitation of these Poor Student Football Players and actually forces players to Strike, because its the right thing to do.

Problem is, as of this moment, 100% of college graduates spend at least $8,500 on book alone, when it should NEVER cost more than $1,000.

Here is a REAL problem they need to fix. Especially now that the Federal Government has taken over.
How it used to work
1. A class requires a certain textbook.
2. Student buy new textbook for $100.
3. All students after buy USED Textbook for $15

Schools and Book makers said FUCK THAT and made these rules.
1. ALL Required Classes must use NEW Textbooks. (I know this used to be the norm, dont know now)
2. BUY, at a higher price, USED textbooks then BURN THEM. (this is simple math. Sell Book for $100, Buy it back for $25, Sell new Book $110. Before it was Sell Book for $100 and have students pass it down to 10 other students)
3. Make sure no Textbook is used for more than 2 years. Every year the book industry comes out with a REVISION...

There is a real problem, a problem that causes every self spending student into over 10K in debt alone from a scam.

Well that was an unintended rant...
