Made the mistake of taking a Sri Lanka flight through Colombo rather than direct to Dubai. Barely made connection w/minutes to spare. Landed late at night in Dubai, found my snorkel of Oman had been canceled without explanation. Oh well. Took my credit cards to Mall of the Emirates instead. Considered Ski Dubai, then, given my history of breaking things, ruled it out.
Spent a couple days in a 5 star hotel downtown, resting up & catching up on pictures. Then off to Cairo. Stayed in a small boutique hotel, stones throw from Pyramids & caught the light show each evening. Wanted to visit the new Grand Egyptian Museum but opening delayed AGAIN & they wanted large amounts of American dollars to sneak you in. Visited the Antiquities Museum instead.
Fortunately, the Tut exhibit was back, except for his tomb which has been transported back to the Valley of the Kings with the reopening of his tomb there. Couldn't take any pix in either the Tut exhibit or the royal mummies exhibit.
The great pyramid from my balcony.
Sphinx & 3 smaller pyramids from balcony. Late afternoon & a big sandstorm had kicked up. Plus they were having some kind of all Africa conference & had put up partitions blocking my easy view of the Sphinx.
Moon over Pyramids
Sphinx lit with the night light show.
If you saw The Mummy (Brendan Fraser version), this should look familiar. The Antiquities Museum in downtown Cairo.
So much to see & film here.
One of the Pharaoh masks
Inner cover
Outer cover. These things weighed tons.
Yes, that's an actual mummy, just not one of the major royal ones. The royal exhibit had several Ramses, Seti & an Amenhotep or two.
