Guess that depends. What are some qualities and features you’re looking for in an SUV? What are some things that are deal breakers?

For a midsize SUV the Toyota RAV4 has plenty of storage and top quality.

If you're looking for something that can get out of its own way, the Ford Escape might be your best option at least close to your price range.
The RAV4 dropped the V6 option years ago and Subaru just canned the Forester XT turbo. The performance version of the CRV is called the Acura RDX and will be way out of your price range. The Equinox has never seems to be really competitive in this space and I really hated the Cherokee when I test drove it, but you might have a different reaction to it...I was 99% sure I was going to buy when when I drove the the dealer and was shocked by how much I disliked it.

If you don't care about performance, there are lots of small and midsized SUVs you should be able to snag for $30k. If you are looking for AWD, the CRV had a really poor system as of 4-5 years ago...a Swedish car mag put the front wheels on rollers on nearly flat ground and there wasn't enough power to the rears to get the car moving at all. Honda might have improved it since then, though. The AWD in my RAV6 was tolerable, but both of my Subarus had/have really good systems.

I guess the usual: decent fuel economy, good safety options and something that won't break down every 10k miles. I probably put less than 250 mi a week on a car.

No manuals. I want to avoid CVTs too but they seem to be on all the newer trucks now.

Yeah, I've been looking at the Forester and CR-V right now for potential choices. They both have a lot of the features I want so far.

I know with a 30k budget I'm not gonna get anything with some muscle behind it unless it's used (which sucks, but it is what it is).

Looks like you MIGHT be able to sneak an Escape Titanium with the 2.0l turbo out the door for $30k...a friend of mine is leasing one and is happy with it. It was a tad slower than the Forester XT according to the car mags in 2014, but my buddy says it moves plenty good enough for him. He has owned a Tbird V8 and a 350Z in the past, so he likes to stomp the gas once in a while...

Subaru is coming out with the Ascent that might be a good option for you and would be right in your budget. The Forester would be less but also a bit smaller. You might take a look at the Outback too. The Rav 4 is going to be there similar to the CRV. I personally hate the CRV but I love Honda in general. You might be able to get into a Highlander for around 30k.

I'm 90-ish % sure I'm gonna get the newest Hyundai Santa Fe. It looks like you get the most out of your money in my budget range and the warranties are really good.
