So the article says he's not in financial distress...and it's not going to a charity or anything...yeah, that's just wrong. If a guy is broke or struggling, I understand...but jeez.

Ivy said. “It’s something that he wants to help his kids out with education, the trust and that kind of thing.”

Don't have an issue with that if it is to help his kids out, it can be worse he could use it to support a drug addiction.

Also he hasn't used his fame to cash in like others have:
"Pavelich has been the most private of the “Miracle” team members. While Eruzione has made a living touring and speaking, and others make appearances from time to time, Pavelich has stayed out of the limelight."

Ozzie Smith sold all his Gold Glove Trophies because he needed the money. Former athletes do this stuff all the time. I just don't view it as a big deal.

Me either. He won it - he can do what he wants to with it. Nobody is taking away his memories and you can't take it with you.

That shit should be in the hall and no where else. Makes me sick to think it's going to wind up in some CEOs man cave or office.

I don't know. I think the living room or in the study would look nice with the right case and lighting.

Remember - capitalization and punctuation matter!!

I don't know if a Golden Glove is a good comparison. It's given out every year to many people. The 1980 Gold medal for Ice Hockey transcends mere "memorabilia". It's not an ordinary trophy. It's a piece of history.

Think of it this way. Some aristocrat had a silver bowl made once. A lot of people own a silver bowls. But that particular silver bowl means something different. It represents a LOT more. Would you be okay with a descendant of Lord Stanley of Preston claiming ownership of the original challenge cup and then putting it on ebay?

Billiard Room would be nice. But 43 would say...

92040-that-belongs-in-a-museum-gif-I-AhR4.gif

First and foremost, it belongs with the person who rightfully earned it. Failing that, it has enough significance that it should be enshrined somewhere that it could be appreciated and given its due respect. Not in some hedge fund manager's office.

Why do we have a Hall of Fame or a Smithsonian Institute?

Oh, 43. You're far too smart to make that analogy. :) The Cup wouldn't be the same. A player's ring is more apt here. And I agree with your sentiment. If there was something like that in my family, it would be priceless.

But not all Olympic champs make millions. Or even hundreds of thousands. So if the guy wants to put his kid through college on it, I can't fault him for that. The ones that make tons off their sports can donate their gear, game balls, etc.

I get your point and there is a nostalgic part of me that agrees with you and appreciates that kind of purist perspective. But I do think it's his property and if wants to keep it, put it in a museum, or sell it to a hedge fund manager, that's his call in my opinion. Though I respect what you're saying (even if I couldn't resist an Indiana Jones quote ;) ).

Some quotes:

The only thing is you’re limited to what you can do with these things,” he said. “You keep it in a vault in the bank somewhere and you take it out once in a while and you look at it and you put it back in. You can’t put them in a house because it could burn or get stolen and it’s just gone and useless. It’s just an impractical thing.

“You can’t say that you never did win a medal just because you don’t have it anymore. You always can say that you got it.”

I’m doing a lot for my daughter here,” Pavelich said by phone on Wednesday. “I want her to get a step forward in life. That’s probably the biggest reason.”

“I don’t think I’ll part with any Rangers stuff.”

Now I'm sad. The things he has gotten rid of is just stuff. In many ways it's not important, its just stuff. Sadly most people don't learn that without experiencing some sort of loss.

"We were contacted by Mark, probably 18 months ago,” Ivy said. “He was curious about the value, initially.”

His wife died suddenly in September of 2012.

Well my feeling is he won it. He earned it and he can do whatever he wants with it. If that means making some bucks so be it.

Im willing to guess he's most proud of being a father. Not winning a hockey tournament 34 years ago.

It is at least not a sad story like Mike Websters was. That guy sold all 4 Super Bowl rings and lived in his car.

I agree with those that say that he won it and can do whatever he wants with it (except swing it at my face!), but I can appreciate the other perspective. Now if this was some guy who was given it 20 years ago as a nice gesture, when he was some kid in a hospital with some serious illness, and now as a healthy adult wants to sell it just to have some extra cash, then yeah I'd think he was a massive douche-bag.
