This one is warranted, though...

DENVER -- The Colorado Avalanche will retire Peter Forsberg's number before the season opener on Oct. 8 against the Detroit Red Wings.

Forsberg's number (21) will join those of Patrick Roy (33), Joe Sakic (19) and Ray Bourque (77) in the rafters at Pepsi Center.

The former NHL MVP attempted a comeback with the Avalanche over the winter, but pulled the plug on his career after a two-game audition because of a chronic foot ailment.

Forsberg was one of the best two-way players in the NHL during his prime, helping the Avalanche to Stanley Cup titles in 1996 and 2001. A foot injury that's hampered him since 2003 robbed him of chunks of his career.

Yet another time Damphousse is ignored. Why isn't his jersey retired by the Avalanche? He almost played there and would have if there wasnt a lockout.

I had to re-check Vinny's stats and they are pretty impressive (432 goals and 1205 points). He had a very good NHL career. But I don't remember Vinny ever doing this...

It's a good thing John Denver didn't wear a number or it would be up there too.

I still get riled up about freaking Bourque being in the rafters in Colorado. Come on.

Well he did enjoy playing against Pronger:

Demers moved him to center because of his defensive play, I wonder what he would have done if he stayed at left wing.
Also after the lockout the main team that wanted Damphousse was said to be the Capitals, some sources said he was even offered a contract by them but chose to retire instead. I wonder what his stats would have looked like if he had played a year or two with OV. Perhaps the HOF might not have been out of the question then.

Yeah, I missed that news or forgot about it. That is completely fucking ridiculous. He didn't even play 100 games there. The Caps retiring Jaromir Jagr's jersey would be less ridiculous.

I'd equate it to the Pens retiring Billy Guerin's number...traded for him, won a Cup. Played one more season, then retired. Only Billy had won a Cup his rookie year. But still...I'd never retire Guerin's number here. LOVE him, like they do in Denver, but that's just silly.

What's so weird about the Avalanche is that they have retired all of the numbers they have in the same year that player retired. That is VERY unusual to do, and to take that same approach for EVERYONE you have retired is even more strange.

To give some comparison, I looked at a couple other teams:
-Hurricanes - another team a little quick on the trigger has never retired a jersey in the same year as the retirement
-Red Wings - on average, it takes 18.8 years before a jersey is retired
-Gretzky - the Kings took 6 years before they retired his jersey as a team, and he's freakin' Wayne Gretzky

When are they going to retire the jersey of Doug VanderHyde, legendary Pepsi Center vendor who once sold 328 bags of popcorn in a single period?
