long overdue. he's had an 85 OPS+ going back to the beginning of 2017.

one of the greatest 1st basemen of all-time. A career 145 OPS+ is outstanding, but it doesn't even do justice to what he did as a Cardinal. .328/.420/.617, 170 OPS+, 445 home runs, 86.6 WAR in St. Louis. One of the greatest postseason hitters of all-time as well (.323/.431/.599, 19 home runs in 77 games)

No doubt was a terrible contract.

Be interesting to see if the Cards pick him back up at the minimum.

Yeah, was thinking this almost certainly his last year, and the parties might have interest in ending it where it began.

I wouldn’t expect it. Pujols is a DH at this point(and not a very good one).

Yeah, I don't see where he'd fit on the Cardinals unless it would mean that Matt Carpenter would never see another plate appearance. They have the same OBP but Pujols would be an upgrade as a 'you're just on the team because of nostalgia' slot.

Most of us thought that contract would come back to bite the angels and it did. Cards look smart for letting him walk at that point

No player should get a 10 year contract ever. But 10 years for a 32-year old player??? Basically a disaster for the Angels. Obvious to everyone at the time, too.

One all-star appearance and two 17th place MVP finishes. $240m doesn’t buy what it used to.

It's just amazing how little he walked as an Angel versus STL. Yeah he had a lot of intentional walks, but he still averaged around 60-70 non-intentional walks. He only had two seasons in LA with 50+ walks. Most players see their walks increase as they get older, and it's pretty amazing that an all-time great hitter would see them decrease.

'Hard hit outs' syndrome. He got pitches he liked and they went into gloves.

I know the last year he was on the Cardinals he just hit into double play after double play. Cardinals started running a lot of hit and runs because of it and I think that showed up in the World Series. He was also banged up that year so despite the good season you could see the wheels coming off.

It sounds like those problems accelerated once teams started running shifts against him.

Unfortunately this isn't really a surprising end to his outstanding career.

Had no idea until now that he's the all-time leader in GIDP at 403. Ripken's second at 350, Fake Pudge is 3rd at 337. Miggy's 5th all-time at 325 but I don't think he's going to catch up.

Holy moly, I don't know if that's a record that will ever be broken. Obviously not one he's proud of.
