Yes but it is the ground work of the election and the roots of each characters development. Even if they move away from it like you said and they don't make it a mainstay it will be the root of each character.I honestly don't think the election or politics itself is gonna be a huge mainstay of the season. I think the election was just used as a setting to let the viewers know why these things are happening. I highly doubt the election or politics is used as a main storyline from here on out. Seems like they are just focusing on Sarah's character's "hallucinations" (maybe) of the clowns and how it's affecting her son and the addition of Winter and Kai into their lives. We'll see though. Either way, they didn't seem to be focusing too much on the election in the first episode. I think it was just used as a time setting and showing the extreme reactions from both sides of the political spectrum.
Also, not a fan at all about using kids in horror films. Especially one of which is as gruesome as what was in episode 1. I get the kids and ghosts in horror films, but using kids as a plot of warping their mind, no thanks. This is just a personal preference and nothing against AHS. I just hate seeing kids in these type of roles.
