Someone please talk me down from the ledge here

Gophers(home team) down 1 games to 0 to Oregon State.

Bottom 5 2-2 game.

Lead off man is on(actual leadoff guy). Pitcher was WILD last inning. It’s a 2-1 count.

Do you seriously have your fucking .380 hitting 2 hitter bunt???

Is this college baseball strategy???

Holy fuck.

I know old school west coast baseball is all about bunting, squeeze bunts, safety bunts, any kind of bunt regardless of the hitter.

Sometimes Arizona’s coach falls in love with that shit too so I feel ya.

Have you just started watching the team late in the year? Depends on the coach. It depends on the coaches style and the situation for sure. But if the coach is consistent in situations like that then I usually am ok with it. Unfortunately Mainieri is never consistent but I barely watched any LSU this year due to life getting in the way so meh.

Lulz @ college baseball. Got a team out here, who is the only one in the country with their own network, but gotta try and cheat against an OVC team.

The Gopher coach is playing the odds.

He's got a good thrower on the mound. He believes the game
will be a low scoring affair. He wants to bunt the runner into
a) scoring position and b) stay out of the double play.

He knows that his #3 and #4 stick men are coming up. A hit
from either one of them will give them the lead. It's the bottom
of the 5th. You play for the lead not for a big inning, and you
believe your pitching will hold OSU down.

In a nutshell, yes.

College baseball is primarily a 'Small Ball' game. The strategy is to move runners. It's a result of toning down the bats from the NCAA "Gorilla Ball" days of yore.

The reason for toning down the bats was two part.
1) To reduce scoring that was getting way out of hand. In some cases football scores.
2) Player safety. Particularly pitchers. The ball was coming off the bat so hard and fast, the pitchers didn't have time to react and protect themselves.

A lil' history to explain...

In 2009 the NCAA banned the use of composite bats due to unsafe batted-ball exit speeds. Players learned to roll composite bats, which made them hit balls harder and farther due to an increased trampoline effect inside the composite bat. The bats were lighter and stronger and increased player's bat speed.

As of 2009 only aluminum alloy bats could be used during games. The bats and barrel must be made from a single piece of alloy.

That tweak to the game had an undesired effect in virtually eliminating the home run (Gorilla Ball), so coaches had to perfect the small ball game to compensate.

Eliminating the home run made the game boring, so in 2015 the NCAA made another adjustment. They lowered the seams on the ball to basically MLB standards so there would be less resistance with the air on fly balls. It's increased home-runs somewhat, but still not to the point of getting back to Gorilla Ball. Small ball is still the most vital part of the game both offensively and defensively.

To sum it up....At 2-2 with the lead off on 1st base, a sac bunt moves him to 2nd, as opposed to a grounder into a potential double play.
With the lead-off now on 2nd, the double play eliminated, and just the one out, a well placed single by batters #3 or #4 typically gets him home to make it 3-2.

That is small ball.
