Actually, Alabama did more than just schedule to win games: they recruited, developed, coached, and played to win games.

I have a feeling that expectations in Tuscaloosa will be like UCLA, post John Wooden. Anything less than a Championship game appearance is an abject failure. Saban set the bar that high

Only for the uninformed. College football is a different animal now, and I doubt anyone will be dominant. Well unless you play a schedule like OSU.

I won't be surprised if we enter another "drought" like we did between Stallings and Saban.

Saw the post Bear Era and the post Stallings Era.

It’s always very hard to follow a legend and I think Saban is the greatest college football coach of all time - winning 7 titles in a 20 year period in an amazing accomplishment. It will be interesting to see what DeBoer does.

And just as soon as it was legal for others to do what he was doing he was out. Just how it went down.

Please elaborate. What exactly did Saban do that was previously illegal but now legal for others to do?

Just as I thought. NADA! OU can't win so in your mind that equates to winners MUST cheat! Childish!
Nothing to do with OU but we have had our share anyway. He ran because the playing field has been leveled, everyone knows it’s true. Hey remember when he thought the no huddle should be illegal? That was awesome.

cannot even say much as our OOC is a disaster this year.....though I'm sure you know it's not usually the case (and had to take Washngton off the OOC).

It's certainly possible but if Deboer can recruit you should be fine.

I've been warning my nephews about that who've only known the Saban era....Phrases like, 'You don't know what it's like to suffer!' and 'Mike Shula! Wait until you get your version!'

I admit, I'm nervous.

I don't buy that. Saban won because he was a hell of a coach.

Hell, Spurrier used to say that the shotgun was for teams that couldn't block. After getting destroyed by Nebraska's pass rush in the "Fiasco" Bowl after the 1995 season and seeing Wuerffel get beaten into the ground in Tallahassee in 1996 with FSU's pass rush. He changed tactics for the Sugar Bowl vs FSU. Wuerffel started the opening drive in the shotgun and remained in it most of the game. It gave Wuerffel just enough time to get his passes off and the result was a 52-20 win. He didn't rag on the shotgun again.

It's just so hard to know because of how well he recruited (and I don't mean this as a knock against him). Now recruiting is more than half the battle as a coach so could certainly say he might be the best ever coach.

But as an actual coach on the field? Just so hard to know because of the talent discrepancy he so often had.....and that's not just true of him.
