We should fire Marvin now and make an offer to Kelly so big he couldn't refuse. I have believed for quite a while now the NFL is way too conservative. Once a team has a first down across their own 30 yard line, the attitude should be you have four downs to make ten yards, not three. Fourth and anything less than five should be a go for it almost all the time,

I would agree if he was not the head coach of the Bengals. If he was here and goes for it on 4th and 1, it would not be converted. The RB would fall down or Gresham would drop a ball thrown right to him to turn the ball over.

If it was for any other team than the Bengals, I would say it was a good idea. However, our execution sucks so bad, we would have to be graded on a curve because of how inept we really are. We would bring the numbers down to dramatic.

Another difference...college teams like the Ducks do not have to face Troy P. on 4th down in Pittsburgh with the game on the line. Or Ray Lewis. Or several other superstars.

Unless it is 4th and 1 or less and we are on the opposing teams 45 or in towards the endzone, I do not go for it typically no matter what with this team.

I call BS.

The disparity between offenses and defenses in college is much much greater than in the NFL. That's why the same motto of "any given Sunday" is used in the NFL and not college. Oregon went on to win 49-0. Who gives a crap if they go for it every single 4th down. They weren't going to lose.

NFL teams on the other hand are too good. Too often you see crappy home teams hang in there with the big boys. The field position game is too big.

As an argument that this might work in the NFL, the article says:

Pundits argued that the Wildcat was a gimmick, that defenses would adjust, that it would never last, and they were partially right. Defenses did adjust, yet somehow, five years later, more than fifty percent of NFL teams have a version of the Wildcat in their playbook.

The Wildcat IS still a gimmick. While more than 50% of teams have a version of it, with the exception of 1 or 2 crappy teams, they only use it for a play or 2 game. Poor argument.

That said, I agree some coaches are way too conservative. There are absolutely scenarios where many teams don't go for it when they likely should. However, there are a number of coaches who have already figured this out. Furthermore, the creativity in the league has grown exponentially over the last few seasons. You even see teams more often kick an onside kick at random junctures of the game. You see a lot more faked punts. It is all already in place.

The league does not need Chip Kelly.

If an NFL team goes for it on 4th down a lot, it will be on tape, it will be prepared for, this is the pro league. If you want to win, don't turn the ball over, not on ints, not with fumbles, and not on downs. if you must turn the ball over, then punt it.

I never said it would happen. I said it should happen. Big difference grad. And we'll be watching Marvin fuck up games for the next ten years, at least.

And the math is correct, teams should do it. The NFL is still way too conservative, and Marvin Lewis is the poster boy representing that conservatism.

I agree - And Marvin pretty much represents what is wrong with the league. Look at all the bums that continue to remain employed even after they have repeatedly failed.

Marvin Lewis
Norv Turner
Romeo Crennel
Chan Gailey
Mike Shanahan
Jason Garrett
Andy Reid (he flamed out 3 years ago)
Mike Mularkey

It's like these guys are sacred cows and can't be axed..... You'd figure more owners would roll the dice every now and then and find something new.

Well, Shanahan did win back to back SB's.

The league definitely needs a greater influx of some young blood.

Check out Shanahan's record post-Elway.

You need a good QB to win consistantly. How many good coaches won many SB's without a pretty good QB? Out of the coaches that did win without a good QB, how many of those coaches had a dominate defense that owned the league?

Brady, Manning, Manning, Rodgers (and soon to add Luck)
unless your pittsburgh, or have one of the above QBs, your just not that likely to win the Superbowl.
