The roots to the tree, it all started right here as far as recorded African American goes.

Obviously early jazz and blues is what African Americans first gave us on record. Talking pre 1940's

Louis Armstrong
Cab Calloway
Bessie Smith
Ma Rainey
Blind Lemon Jefferson
Charley Patton................strange mix
Robert Johnson......not during his life time.
Leroy Carr
Lead Belly
Memphis Minnie
Big Bill Broonzy

.......some of the African American "stars" pre 1940.

Considered by blues scholars to be the first blues on record, which is true if talking vocals, W.C.Handy did have a few blues? instrumentals prior to 1920.

1920

If mixing the origins of them black blues, you would start here, yep, out ranked "Crazy Blues" which is too jazzy.

Ma Rainey the first "star" of them blues. From 1920 to 1923 the women rules, that would change in 1924 with.....'

Papa Charley Jackson a Louisiana banjo player, one of the first males to record them blues.

Gus's dad was a slave and he tells the story we heard from Jimmy the Greek.

The harmonica player was Noah Lewis, he is the guy I learned the harmonica from, ah....trying to mimic his sound.

Speaking of great harmonica players, the great Sonny Boy Williamson, and his classic...

Still haven't left the 30's.

He was killed leaving a gig, ice picked to death.

In his book SATCHMO he writes about growing up in the Storyville region of New Orleans (blacks side) and how every night while laying in bed he heard gun shots and screams, fighting. The cops taking the.......let them N wipe each other out......approach.

Charlie Patton has to heard to be believed, and like beer it takes awhile to get it.

Generally considered to be African American, Patton's ancestry was a mixture of white, black and Cherokee. One of his grandmothers was full blood Cherokee. ... When he was a child Patton's family moved from the Mississippi hill country to the Delta to work on the Dockery plantation.Oct 18, 2012

Son House ran with Patton, his first recordings from 1930, here he is in the 60's, yep, rediscovered.

Patton, House, Willie Brown, Tommy Johnson. Ishman Bracey, Bukka White the fathers of them prewar Mississippi Delta Blues.

Love this as we move into the 50's...

No way I can give all those Doowop groups the respect they deserve, and it isn't easy trying to decide who belongs, hmmmm?
