Interesting, I think the Diamondbacks should be in the top 10 though.

1. Cubs. It'll be good to see them choke, though.
2. Royals. I'm pretty sure I lost a bet somewhere to have to rank these 2 this high.
3. Mets.
4. Cardinals. Because they're the Cardinals
5. Blue Jays
6. Dodgers
7. Pirates. How on earth did they not make ESPN's top 10?
8. Astros
9. Nationals. In theory
10. Giants
11. Red Sox. Also in theory.

How are the Red Sox in the top ten again?

We are talking about a team that is a pre season favorite every year, but has finished last three out of the last four and been to the playoffs once in the last six years.

Do I think they improved the team over last year. yes

I believe they will finish second or third in the east, but miss the playoffs again.

Media loves them some Red Sox to begin with

And they especially love the team that spends and spends and spends during an offseason, no matter how wisely or unwisely the signings

The reality is that there are dozens of variables that could go either direction with every team except for a couple on the fringes that could propel a team one way or the other. The media just always sees the upside in Boston because its Boston.

I actually expected the Cardinals to be lower than 5 to be honest. I think most people should be seeing as as a top 10 team and not a top 5 team just due to all of the variables and we are just given a bump because of last year's amazing pitching performance for most of the regular season.

ESPN has to know they are probably getting hits on these lists from the same dozen media markets.

Cardinals are one of those teams that deserve the benefit of any ranking IMO, while the Red Sox dont

Simply because the Cardinals always exceed or meet expectations, while the Sox more often than not, fall way short of them

But I do think the Yadi injury can be a huge one for that team, in a fiercely competitive division
