Somehow, Minecraft turned things around from that heavily-disliked first trailer and tunneled through poor reviews like they were sand to get a huge opening weekend box office:

- biggest so far this year, beating out Captain America 4: Brave New World

- largest of all time for a video game adaptation, beating out The Super Mario Bros. Movie

A fun little movie, good kid/family movie. Six out of 10.

This is one of those movies I'm thankful I don't have kids... not only does the movie look fairly bland, but I guarantee kids are going to a) want to buy more Minecraft merch (Jesus McDonalds is charging $16 for a fuckin' Happy Meal with a dumb Minecraft 'toy' - literally like a Big Mac plastic block lol), b) be running around the house going "I AM <insert name> (or Steve)" in Jack Black's voice... and all of Jack Black's lines being sarcastic goofy noises, and c) wanting to watch it 24/7 when it is released on TV.

It'll be like "LET IT GOOOO!" all over again. *shudders*

Good luck parents.

And of course this will kill the box office. It's 100% targeted to kids, and that's fine. Kids need movies that entertain them as well... I just would be scraping my eyes/ears out as a parent, having to deal with the aftermath lol.

All said I imagine I'll watch it at some point. I did like Super Mario Bros but that was mostly nostalgia as I played a lot of Mario over the years and as a kid. I did play Minecraft too at some point, but not online and not that much.

Took my boys on Sunday. They loved it. Said it was their new favorite movie.

Lots of cringeworthy forced comedy, but there were a few moments that made me laugh a little. It's not bad but definitely tailored to kids & the minecraft nerds that refuse to grow up. Our theater was full of the latter that were hollering & clapping after every scene. Back in my day I used to call those kids queers.

I'm sure I'll be forced to watch this movie many more times. My boys are already asking to go see it again, but I'm hoping I can pirate it to the home cloud.
