Knowing that the scribbles of some scout in the 1980s can garner an asking price of $5,000 at auction should have everyone trash-diving outside the press box.

Can you imagine what the first reference to Alexei Kovalev as "enigmatic" would get? Or a pencil sketch of Alexandre Daigle hoisting the Stanley Cup? Or Eric Lindros's(notes) name crossed out and "Mario Gretzky" written in?

This is touted as a "one-of-a-kind hockey collectible!" on eBay, and it's actually sort of cool: Central Scouting Service hand-written scouting report from the mid-1980s, that also includes the scout's business card. There are 15 pages in total.

Pretty sure this is from the 1984-85 season, what with the great Wendel Clark atop the rankings - he was taken first overall in 1985 by the Toronto Maple Leafs -- and references to Dana Murzyn (No. 5, Hartford Whalers), Brent Fedyk (No. 8, Detroit Red Wings) and Brent Gilchrist (No. 79, Montreal Canadiens). "CR," we're thinking, could be "current ranking." "SR" ... maybe start of season ranking?

I'll bet some old '80s scouts are scouring their basements right now.
