Davis’ long layoff likely makes him a longshot to beat out Alex Boone at right guard, the only spot currently without an entrenched starter on the 49ers line. Boone took the majority of the first team snaps — Daniel Kilgore also saw some time at the position — during spring work after Adam Snyder jumped to Arizona as a free agent. Davis’ experience could make him a useful reserve piece on the offensive line in San Francisco.
How Davis fits for S.F.
4:02PM ET Leonard Davis | Lions
Apparently not quite pleased with how their roster was shaping up on the interior offensive line, the San Francisco 49ers elected to sign veteran OG Leonard Davis on Thursday. The 375-pounder was an NFL starter from 2001 through 2010, but didn't get on the field at all for the Detroit Lions after signing there in 2011.
The current starter at RG for San Francisco is Alex Boone, but Davis provides some insurance at that spot. ESPN NFC West blogger Mike Sando has more:

Some depth was needed
"The other candidate for the job, Daniel Kilgore, also lacks experience. And with rookie Joe Looney recovering from serious foot surgery, the team could use other contingencies at guard. Looney, a fourth-round draft choice this year, suffered a Lisfranc fracture during Senior Bowl week. It's unclear when he'll be ready to contribute."
I remember they brought him in during the first few weeks of FA, I guess after nobody else showed interest he decided to take what the 49ers were offering.
Amazing.....when I saw both this thread title and the Antonio Bryant thread on the page, I figured someone was dragging up old posts from the past few years.
Great if he's got anything left. Unless the staff knows something we don't know about one of the young players, this position is a helluva question mark.....nothing even resembling a starter.
