Serious question.

If Charles Wang were to put the Islanders up for sale & a local buyer wasn't possible who would buy the Islanders & move them to Markham?

I honestly dont think the league wouldnt allow it because GTA is their sacred cash cow

they want to expand there ... not relocate there > expansion fees go to the owners and are not considered part of the total league wide revenues that the NHLPA gets their share of

Makes sense.

Does this mean Quebec is basically it in terms of relocation options for the league? I know there has been talk of Seattle, but they seem to want their NBA team back instead of a NHL team.

I'd be really surprised if this happened. I can't imagine the Leafs (among a few other teams) ever allowing a 2nd team in the GTA. I think news of that potential building first surfaced a few months ago and it said they weren't looking for a major tenant but it was more for concerts and possibly hosting WJC once in a while.

now that Bell/Rogers owns the Leafs I think they would love the prospect of another team in the horseshoe to attach every aspect of their telecomm business too ... the cross promotion would be insane and like dash said it truly would become the Toronto Sports Network

theyd love it more though if the 2nd team would just play at the acc and pay them for event management

I just don't see this happening. The Leafs may suck but their fans are very faithful and I don't see many jumping ship or pulling for both teams.

Wouldn't they need an OK from the Sabres too? Isnt there a territorial protection for 150 or something? Correct me if I'm wrong here.

I don't think it's 150 miles Boss, I think it's about half that. Besides, weren't you the one who posted in the past that if Leafs fans want to see a NHL team, it's only a short 90 minute drive to Buffalo?

there are enough people in Toronto that hate the Leafs to support another local team.
the Leafs have become the 'corporate team' of the city. Seems there's room for some blue-collar branded competition.

as for territory rights, that just comes down to $$$

This true about coming here to see an NHL team LOL, but seriously it's 92 miles by car to Toronto and about 70 as the crow flies. How does that work? Even if it's 100 miles it's within the Leafs and Sabres territory.

True puck, There are a lot of people there that want to see the Leafs but can't get tickets. Also it is a hockey crazy area and the GTA has like 5.5 million so they can support another team.

Good points.

Ahhh I forgot about that. I thought it was still the teacher's pension that owned MLSE. I'm still a bit puzzled about those 2 competitors deciding to become partners on that venture. As I'm sure you know, they also own the Raptors and FC. I'm really not sure I see how it would be more profitable for them to have another team in the area. Especially since this new hockey team could have home games the same night as the Raptors.

Not sure there is anyone. They had a guy who had the money a few short years ago, but the iPad and Android have pretty much eliminated any money he had.

Bettman never liked him anyway.

I think that was during the Hamilton talk, boss. Markham is northeast of the GTA, far enough away from Buffalo by road or boat.

Maybe even closer to Ottawa than Buffalo, actually. Not sure. I've been to Markham, it's all suburb.
