Production ready in 2013 and only a few hundred were built in 15 & 16 then pffft................... it was gone.
That leads me to believe that it was a POS that either had major mechanical issues or people were getting killed in fender bender type accidents because the car was flimsy AF. Maybe it was just that the fuel mileage claims were greatly exaggerated and once the word got out the little VW XL1 died a natural death.
The car could not meet US auto standards and there was also the concurrent VW diesel scandal whereby software allowed VW cars to pass emissions lab tests by temporarily suppressing pollutants. During actual driving, pollution of certain chemicals went up 40x. Further research tells you the car is basically a 100 mpg diesel.
