Truly, this is such a "special" team that I thought I'd create a thread to just talk about the ways they creatively go about being possibly historic.

I had posted their W-L records a few days ago showing how they do based on the number of runs scored (I may pull that in to this thread) but this first post is to show how the bullpen has helped shape this season so far. Here are the losses based on bullpen performance:
April 5th - Giants take a 2-1 lead in the 6th inning, only to have both Winn and Miller melt down in the 8th inning, allowing 4 runs to score. Giants lose 2-5.
April 6th - This one may not fully be on the bullpen but they helped. Giants go up 4-0 on the Phillies by the end of the 4th inning. Houser allows 2 runs in the 5th and gets in trouble in the 6th inning, putting runners on, before Borucki comes in and completely melts down. Giants lose 4-6.
April 30th (DH game 1) - Giants going into the 9th inning up 2-1 in Philly. Walker comes and promptly loses the game by allowing 2 runs in the 9th.
April 30th (DH game 2) - Giants take the lead in Philly in the top of the 9th inning, only to have Winn give up the tying run and Gage give up the winning run in the 10th.
May 3rd - Giants take a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the 8th in Tampa, only to have Walker give up the tying run that inning and Kilian give up the winning run in the 10th.
May 6th - Tie game 1-1 in SF against the Padres. Houser starts the 6th and first batter gets on base due to an error. Winn comes in and walks the first batter but gets two quick outs. He is pulled for Gage, who proceeds to give up a triple, giving the Padres a lead. Walker would come in the next inning and give up 2 more runs.
May 9th - Giants tied with the Pirates 0-0 going into the top of the 5th. Roupp gives up a single to the first batter and is pulled for Borucki. He then proceeds to allow 2 runners to score. Walker, Brubaker, Santos and Koss later give up a combined 11 runs (with some defensive gaffes) to lose the game 3-13.
May 14th - Against the Dodgers, in LA, tied up 2-2 going into the bottom of the 5th inning. Roupp gives up a walk, out and single before being replaced by Gage. He then gets a strikeout before giving up two singles and a walk, allowing the Dodgers to win the game (Giants lose 2-5).
May 19th - Giants leading 3-1 going into the bottom of the 9th in Arizona. Kilian and Gage combine to give up 4 runs in that inning to lose the game.
May 27th - This is technically on the bullpen but they really did their best to not blow it. Giants tied with D-Backs in SF going into the 7th inning. McDonald gets the first out, gives up two singles and then gets pulled for Gage. Gives up ground ball that should have been an out but Devers makes the error and bases are loaded. Next batter hits a sacrifice fly that, if Devers played the ball correctly the batter before, would have been the third out. Instead, D-Backs score what would be the winning run. Gage strikes out the next batter.
May 29th - Giants go into the bottom of the 9th in Colorado with a 6-3 lead. So TV sits on Kilian throughout the 9th, allowing 5 runs and gives up the loss.
June 6th - Giants take a 2-1 lead in the game against the Cubs on the road in the top of the 9th, only to have Winn allow the tying run in the bottom half of the inning and Hentges give up the winning run in the 10th.
June 8th - Giants go into the top of the 9th leading the Nationals 3-1. Winn relieves Webb to start the 9th and gives up 3 runs. The Giants don't score in the bottom half of the 9th and lose the game.
June 19th - Giants leading 3-2 in Miami. Bottom of the 7th, Hentges comes in and allows 2 runs to lose the game.
June 25th - Giants up 6-2 at home against the A's, TV hands the ball over to the bullpen. Walker and Miller give up 2 runs that inning. Smith gives up another run in the 8th but Giants finish 8 full still up 6-5. Then TV decides for the 2nd time this season to let Kilian stay in the 9th way too long, giving up 4 runs and the game in the process!

The Giants have lost 47 games so far this season. The bullpen has been directly responsible for 15 of those losses (maybe 14 if you don't count the May 27th game and just put that on the defense). That is more losses than I thought they've given up but still not nearly as many as is on the starting rotation (and/or offense and defense).

Putting this stat over here from another thread (and expanding and updating it to reflect games through 6/25):

The Giants are:
15-0 when they score at least 7 runs
21-2 when they score at least 6 runs (6-2 in 6 run games)
24-5 when they score at least 5 runs (3-3 in 5 run games)
24-8 when they score at least 4 runs (0-3 in 4 run games)
30-19 when they score at least 3 runs (6-11 in 3 run games)
32-30 when they score at least 2 runs (2-11 in 2 run games)
33-39 when they score at least 1 run (1-9 in 1 run games)
33-47 overall (of course, 0-8 when they don't score at all)

I find it amazing that this team was scored only 1 run in 10 games and only won 1 of those 10 games.

And that they've been shutout in another 8 games.

2-11 when they score exactly 2. I suspect that number is closer to about .333 league wide.

6-11 with exactly 3 runs. I would guess league wide, that would be close to .500 (probably slightly under .500)

I updated the post to include this information. It would be interesting to see how they compare to the rest of the league.

1-9 in 1-run games may be a BIT low, but understandable.

6-2 in 6-run games feels right.

The games between those show that pitching is a real problem on this team.

And I think the starting rotation has been a bigger problem than the bullpen but most of that is on Houser and Mahle. Seems like just about every start those two have made (except Mahle's last start) had the Giants losing before the bullpen even had a chance to screw it up.

Also, what I didn't look at with the bullpen is how often they took a game the Giants were already losing and made it worse or killed any kind of offensive rally with lack of SDIs. Of course, when a team plays this poorly, it is not surprising that the blame can be passed around to the starting rotation, bullpen, offense and defense.

Interesting .. this is through the eyes of offense... wonder what it would look like through the eyes of pitching ... if we only gave up X runs what would our record be ... .... something like ... if we only gave up 3 or less runs ... what was our record. ... think I'll see what I can find ...

So you’re saying that when they get to three runs, STOP SCORING unless they are going to hit a 2 run homer?

2 home runs for Devers today. He did this last year too, got on a tear after it was too late to matter

In lieu of a game day thread, I'll just post the results of today's game here.

Basically, Arraez is really trying to get traded and earn a big pay day in free agency and Devers is continuing to not suck when it doesn't count.

Roupp is trying to get demoted and Houser is trying to get back in the rotation (or traded, or both). You'll just have to guess the score (or cheat and look it up) from the these updates numbers:

As of 6/30:
7-0 when they don't allow the other team to score
6-0 - 1 run allowed (13-0)
7-4 - 2 runs allowed (20-4)
6-8 - 3 runs allowed (26-12)
1-3 - 4 runs allowed (27-15)
3-8 - 5 runs allowed (30-21)
3-9 - 6 runs allowed (33-32)
0-4 - 7 runs allowed (33-36)
0-5 - 8 runs allowed (33-41)
1-4 - 9 runs allowed (34-45)
1-5 - 10 or more runs allowed (35-50)

15-0 when they score 7 runs or more
6-2 when they score 6 runs (21-2)
4-3 when they score 5 runs (25-5)
0-4 when they score 4 runs (25-9)
7-11 when they score 3 runs (32-20)
2-12 when they score 2 runs (34-32)
1-10 when they score 1 run (35-42)
0-8 when they get shut out (35-50)

Projected final record for 2026: 67-95

26 of the 36 Giants wins when they score 5 or more so they really are boom or bust with the bullpen not able to secure wins in lower scoring games and to a lesser degree the starting pitching.
