With yesterday's games behind us, we turn our attention to today's games and the two remaining ones in the NFL's 2025 season. Following a lost season, this is the time of year when the playoff picture becomes clearer and eliminated front offices turn their attention to the draft order and the offseason. With that in mind, these are today's games that hold relevance to Washington's draft position.

1. Arizona Cardinals vs Atlanta Falcons.... Commanders should pull for the Cardinals to win.
2. N.Y. Jets vs. New Orleans Saints.... Commanders should pull for the Jets to win.

Wins by both today leave Washington with the 5th pick in the draft.

In other games, Commanders' Nation is pulling for.

Giants over the Vikings
Raiders over the Texans
Titans over the Chiefs

Commanders are currently ahead of the Saints in the draft order: Commanders' 7th, Saints 8th, so a win by the Saints doesn't help because they would remain lower in the order on win total: Commanders' 4, Saints 5 with a win.

A Jets win equals the win total at 4, and Washington moves up on SOS: Jets 536, Commanders 512.

Are you sure a Cardinals and Jets win leaves us at 5 and not 6? Every simulator I've run, always leaves us at 6 in this scenario.

Could be missing something, but had it played out that way the three teams Commanders, Jets, and Cardinals, all would have W/L records of 4-11 leaving the tie breaker on SOS Washington with the lower SOS at 504 would have the higher pick over the other two, Jets 534, and Cardinals 570. Unfortunately, the Jets lost leaving them at 3-12.

Today, we get a much clearer picture of the 2026 playoff participants, and for me, this will be the more entertaining, interesting way to watch the games.
Here’s the clean, high‑stakes rundown for today's NFL games (Sunday, Dec. 28, 2025) that directly affect the playoff picture based on the latest reporting. I’ll keep it tight and focused on what actually changes something.

Games Where Both Teams Have Playoff Implications

These matchups impact seeding, division titles, or wild‑card survival for both sides.

  • Seahawks at Panthers — Seattle can clinch the NFC West with help; Carolina can clinch the NFC South with a win + Bucs loss.
  • Eagles at Bills — Philly is fighting for NFC seeding; Buffalo is battling for the AFC East and wild‑card positioning.
  • Bears at 49ers — Both teams have clinched but are jockeying for NFC seeding, including the No. 1 seed scenario.

Games Where One Team Has Playoff Stakes

These games matter only for one side; the opponent is eliminated.

  • Jaguars at Colts — Jacksonville is alive for AFC seeding; Indy is eliminated.
  • Patriots at Browns — New England can clinch the AFC East with a win + Bills loss/tie.
  • Steelers at Browns — Pittsburgh clinches the AFC North with a win or tie.
  • Buccaneers at Saints — Tampa must win to stay alive in the NFC South race.
  • Rams at Giants — Rams need a win to keep pressure on Seattle for the NFC West.

THE SUBPLOT GAMES.... where draft position becomes the focus, and where, unfortunately, the Commanders find themselves this year. So, for Commanders Nation, the rooting interests are:

1. Arizona over the Bengals
2. Tennessee over the Saints
3. New York Jets over the Patriots
4. Perhaps the Raiders over the Giants**

Should the first three happen, Washington jumps from draft pick #7 to pick #4. A singular win by any one of these three and Washington moves up one place in the order.

**The Browns, who hold the better SOS rating, and because the Raiders play the Giants today, the Commanders are officially eliminated from getting the first pick in the draft, but the third pick is still within their reach if... (Washington loses out and)

Either the Giants or the Raiders go on a two-game win streak, so the winner of their game today becomes the team to pull for in week 17.

Week 17 Games:

The Giants play the Cowboys
The Raiders play the Chiefs
