The Lions have agreed to terms with their first and last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft.

The Lions are set to run rookie minicamp this Friday, May 13 through Sunday, May 15. In years past, Detroit has managed to get most of their rookie class under contract prior to that date.

Detroit Lions announce signing of 7 drafted, 12 undrafted rookies

The Detroit Lions have officially added 19 rookies to their 89-man roster ahead of spring OTAs and minicamps. Second-round pick Kentucky’s Josh Paschal is the only drafted rookie yet to sign his contract.

Over the past week, there have been reports that the Lions were signing their drafted players, including first-round pick Michigan edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson, first-round pick wide receiver Jameson Williams, third-round pick Illinois safety Kerby Joseph, and seventh-round pick Arizona State Chase Lucas.

Not only has the team confirmed those reports but they expanded the list to include fifth-round pick tight end James Mitchell, sixth-round pick linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez, and sixth-round pick edge rusher/linebacker James Houston.

Every team is guaranteed one nationally televised game per year. That's why I'll never understand the calls to take Thanksgiving away from us, if we don't have that game they'll just have to watch the Lions stink it up some other prime time game.

Lions LB coach: Malcolm Rodriguez ‘is one of the smarter young players I’ve ever been around’

Detroit Lions rookie linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez is already getting serious praise from Kelvin Sheppard, the team’s linebacker coach.

“Malcolm Rodriguez is one of the smarter young players I’ve ever been around,” Sheppard told Detroit Lions beat reporter Tim Twentyman on the Twentyman in the Huddle podcast. “That kid, it’s because he’s a naturally smart player, but on top of that, it’s the work he puts in. This kid came in here in two days and he knew both (linebacker) spots.”

Rodriguez has some shortcomings that may cause him to begin further down on the depth chart. His size (5-foot-11, 232 pounds) puts him on the lower end of Lions linebackers on the roster, which is saying something considering the team has clearly favored speed over size.

However, Sheppard noted that if Rodriguez continues to show this kind of intelligence and devotion, he’ll get his shot.

“I looked him right in the eye and said, ‘You’re going to get an opportunity, dude,’” Sheppard said. “I said, ‘When you come in and show me things like that, you’re going to get every opportunity imaginable.”

“I feel like my experience is going to help me, especially in the NFL and especially because I was coached by NFL coaches like Marvin Lewis, (and) Herm Edwards,” Lucas continued. “I’ve been around pro guys. I’ve been around pro coaches. I feel like their competitive nature at the Detroit Lions is going to fit my type of style of how I am, (and) how I play. I feel like just my experience alone probably even got me drafted. I’m just excited. I’m happy and just thankful for this opportunity.”




In 2018 and 2019, Lucas missed double digit tackles, but improved his numbers in 2020 to just two missed tackles (just four games played) and only four missed tackles in 2021 (10 games played).

I don't think that number is unreasonable. The 4th best guy on the line was a Pro Bowl alternate. Lions have many weaknesses, but the healthy oline is truly elite.
