Steven Nelson is a very good corner and he should be resigned. '21 is the last year of both of their contracts, so they can bring Nelson's 14.4MM number down a lot with a long-term deal, and bring Haden's 15.5MM down a bit with a short extension to finish his career. He's still playing at a high level.

But If it comes to keeping Haden and keeping Hilton or Sutton, I say bye to Haden since his dead cap is only about 3MM.

Good updated article on cap speculation...

Projected cap = $180m

Steelers currently $30m OVER the cap including the $5m rollover from 2020

Vance & Maurkice's retirement = +$12m ($13.2m total, but accounts for displacement)

Options...

  1. Ben retires... This is the easiest answer. If he retires then over $18m would be saved (including displacement, $19m total). And boom, the Steelers are nearly cap-compliant. They would still need to free up space for the incoming rookie class.
  2. Restructures/extensions... Introducing some voided years (extension) to Ben's contract would save somewhere around $10m if they can work it out. Throw in restructures to Haden, Tuitt &/or Heyward and they can save an additional $10-13m. The combination Ben & 2/3rds (or all) of the aforementioned restructures would get them cap compliant.
  3. Cutting dead weight... Most debatable option since some of these players still hold value. Nelson & DeCastro are hitting over $14m a piece, but cutting them would only save roughly $8m per contract. Ebron is around $8.5m and seems like an easy decision since they would net the full cap amount if they cut his worthless ass. Derek Watt has a cap around $3.8m. Cutting him would save only $1.6m. You could save north of $25m by cutitng/trading these players. I don't see Nelson being traded though with the CB room potentially taking some big hits with Hilton & Sutton set for FA.
Not sure how this plays into everything:

Not sure how this plays into everything:
The $12m is what they save in base salaries... But yes the dead $9m is still accounted for in that remaining $18m that they are still OVER.

But keep in mind these numbers are all based off the cap projection of $180. I've seen it as low as $170, and now with the new TV deal it could be as high as $200m.

If this new TV deal happens and the cap skyrockets, the Steelers would suddenly be cap-compliant (after Vance & Maurkice's retirements) and they would have $2m in surplus they could use towards their rookie class. Restructuring Haden, Tuitt, Heyward, & Nelson could free up close to $20m on top of that...

They would suddenly have the money to resign Juju, & Hilton/Sutton. If they wanted to go after a big fish on top of retaining those guys, then it would likely mean cutting a big contract somewhere (Haden or Nelson).

This in combination to what his mom posted in response to his post seems to indicate that they want him to remain in Pgh.

Fingers crossed!
He wants to stay in Pittsburgh and be paid as a number one. He's a very good number two and with this team I still think that's a luxury.

We can't forget that Watt's contract is going to look like a QB.

Honestly with the way WR contracts are continuously rising... $17m per year is a damn bargain for what he’s capable of. Before long that will be a mid tier contract.

Maybe. As long as it doesn’t come at the expense of Watt or the defense I guess. I’d rather see that money go to Hilton.

I... don't want to pay Watt QB money.

I don't care how good he is as an OLB. They can't pay a defensive player QB money.

Well, I don't think we would be looking at top QB money. I was more lamenting what that contract would look like.

25 a year would be my guess? A little more than Mack got?

BTW. The more I think about it the more I would really like to see Darnold here. I'm going to be pissed when someone gets him for a 2nd or 3rd rounder while we sit on our thumbs.

Yea that seems right.

If you want a comparison then I'd be lookin at Myles Garrett's contract... 5yr $125m, which is $25m per season.

Why eifert? Id rather have ebron

ebron actually brought his catch rate UP about 2% from what he did over two years in indy:rolleyes2:
I look at it this way, anything is better than Ebron and would be cheaper. Cheaper in the sense the amount of quality TE's on the market he his price would be lower.

From his catch rate going up, I guess from his perspective it can't get any worse. :)
