Rolen seems like he would have a good chance. I guess he was overshadowed by Chipper Jones and Beltre.

My initial ballot, with no new research...

Bonds
Clemens
Jeter
Jones (borderline)
Kent
Pettite
Rolen (borderline)

Wow. A very light class.

Would consider with research or if someone takes up the charge...

Schilling
Vizquel
Ramirez
Sosa
Wagner
Sheffield

Will probably get in, but he just doesn’t get my vote...

Walker

My ballot is:

Adam Dunn
Chone Figgins

That's it.

:comeatmebro:

i know this is a joke... but Dunn is not a TERRIBLE choice... If it wasn't for his reputation with striking out, he would actually be a decent candidate... with a chance...

I don't care about his strikeouts. He was still a very productive hitter over his career (.364 OBP, .490 SLG%, 124 OPS+, 462 home runs on only 1631 hits). the problem is that he was a horrific defensive player. And while he was a very good hitter at times, he was never really elite IMO. he only had four seasons where he even cracked the top 10 in his league in OPS+ (never finished higher than 8th) and only had two seasons in the top 10 in OBP and SLG%.

Hey at least he tried--unlike Baines and Edgar

This is where you see how some of the numbers from the 90's were a little inflated compared to other players in different eras. You have Sheffield listed as a maybe (and rightfully so), but if you look at his raw offensive numbers they look similar to Mike Schmidt (10-11k plate appearances, over 500 homers, a bunch of RBIs and Runs scored OPS around .900). But Schmidt led the league in Homers (and usually the majors) 8 times in 13 years with those numbers and I think finished in the top 5 12 out of 13. When Sheffield was hitting 30-40 homeruns there were sometimes 15-20 other guys doing it too and he never led the league.

Not a perfect comparison because of Schmdt was a gold glove 3b and Sheffield ended up not being a good defender at several positions and Sheffield was a much better contact hitter, but the OPS and some other numbers are pretty close.

But it gives you an idea of why people are supporting Dale Murphy. His overall numbers don't look so great compared to guys in the 90's but he won back to back MVPs and I'm pretty sure those years that Schmidt didn't win the homerun title it was because Dale Murphy did.

All that being said, he still probably had too short of a "prime" to get in. Which is too bad, because I don't even hate Dale Murphy. The Braves were in the other division back then and they were absolutely awful.

the most interesting one IMO is Sosa...

if Bonds and Clemens make it, then doesn't Sosa HAVE to make it??? or are we just moving the
Steroid era HR milestone up??

Sosa is kind of a strange case. His HR numbers scream HOF, but I never saw him as a HOFer when he was playing. Sure his peak years were pretty awesome but I always saw him as a 4-5 AllStar player
