Two main factors -- age and cost. Also, I heart Wheeler.
Both have had serious injuries in the past. Ryu is 3 years older, so I get that. But he's also been a lot more productive when he is healthy. How much less do you think Wheeler would sign than Ryu?

We are just spitballing here, but I would guess a lot less and for fewer years. I'd expect Ryu to go in the $23MM per year range and Wheeler to go around $14MM a year. Again, just a guess.

It turns out that Wheeler got a little over $23M.

So the Angels signed Anthony Rendon to a $245 million, 7 year contract. Wow. He was in the top 10 of quite a few offensive categories : BA, OBP, SLG, OBP (duh). He led the NL in doubles.

At least he didn't put a bunch of B.S. in his contract (or maybe it just hasn't come out yet?). Such as "gets a private box/suite for 15 home games", or "gets a suite on the road". Hell, you're getting paid $35M a year - you want that sh1t, buy it!

The prices for contracts are just crazy this year. Maybe FZ's plan is to get the Giants to totally suck in 2020, in order to get a top-5 draft pick in 2021?

I don't think he's tanking. I think he consistently is going to add value wherever he can. The deal with the Angels was pretty crafty and I'd expect him to do another of those deals (Myers?). He's going to incrementally upgrade the organization, one small piece at a time. The odds of the 2020 Giants improving 12 games over the 2019 team are slim, so playoffs aren't realistic. However, if he can get value for Shark/JC/Belt/Craw/Longo he'll deal them to upgrade the org. The Gausman signing looks like a value play where, if he works out, he can be flipped for young talent at the deadline. In short, I like the direction we are going. It's not tanking though.

I'm not sure this half measure decision making will work. Take, for example, how he held back at the 2019 midpoint. The team got hot at the worst time, so he keeps from shipping out the two biggest assets for the trade market, Smith and Bumgarner. I like that he didn't do a Sabean by keeping all the vets and trading away prospects for more vets, so the transactions could have been worse. I guess I don't like grabbing more rebound guys, hope they bounce back and maybe trade them at the deadline. If the team flirts with possible playoff potential this next July, how many guys who could be traded for a decent package will be left on the team? This philosophy, in my opinion, is not without serious possible flaws.

I don't see it as "half measured." He's going to upgrade at every opportunity where it makes financial sense to do so. Thus, the churn of fringe players, the taking on of Cozart to get Wilson, the signing of Gausman, etc. The downside risk is small, and the talent in the org keeps increasing. He has assessed the situation as one where the playoffs is quite unlikely so spending big money in FA doesn't male sense. Next year, it may make more sense. For now, I like what he's doing. Let's see how it all plays out
