2018 thread: 2018 Top Prospects

Here we are again, one of my favorite exercises. For years it was difficult to find information on even the very best prospects, but now if you dig far enough you can find information on just about any minor leaguer you want (if you know where to look).

The Giants' farm system is weak, undoubtedly, so the new group has a lot of work to do. It will be interesting to see what a new approach to the development side brings.

The good news is, I think the top-3 guys in the system (Bart, Ramos and Luciano) can stack up against many other team's top-3 out there, and there are a lot of wildcards further down the list that could turn into special players as well. Of late the Giants' system was filled with lower-ceiling players with less risk, but this year the reverse seems true. Those guys are still around (the Anderson, Howard and Avelino types), but they are now mixed in with these extremely raw, high-upside guys that could never make it out of A-ball, or become everyday players (the Canario, Santos, Fabian and Gonzalez types).

You'd like a little bit more certainty, and definitely more proximity, but I think last year sniped two of those medium risk-reward guys in Suarez and Duggar.

So while the Giants' system isn't very good, there are guys to get excited about, guys to dream about, and new developments to look forward to.

In this thread I'll post info, lists and such throughout the year. The January instructs have started, so there will be info trickling in soon.

My top "whatever it ends up being" list:

1) Joey Bart- C
2) Heliot Ramos- OF
3) Marco Luciano- SS
------
4) Alexander Canario- OF
5) Gregory Santos- RHP
------
6) Melvin Adon- RHP
7) Shaun Anderson- RHP
8) Logan Webb- RHP
9) Chris Shaw- OF
10) Heath Quinn- OF
11) Sean Hjelly- RHP
12) Aramis Garcia- OF
------
13) Jairo Pomares- OF
14) Diego Rincones- OF
15) Luis Toribio- 3B
16) Camilo Doval- RHP
17) Garrett Williams- LHP
18) David Villar- 3B
19) Jacob Gonzalez- 3B
20) Juan De Paula- RHP
21) Sandro Fabian- OF
22) Mike Gerber- OF
23) Drew Ferguson- OF
24) Travis Bergen- LHP
25) Manuel Geraldo- SS/3B
26) Jalen Miller- 2B
27) Jose Marte- RHP
28) Jake Wong- RHP
29) Sam Coonrod- RHP
30) Abitael Avelino- UTL
31) C.J Hinojosa- UTL
32) Ryan Howard- UTL
33) Aaron Bond- OF
34) Aaron Phillips- RHP
35) Seth Corry- LHP
36) Yorlis Rodriguez- IF

You get the idea. There's a break after the top three, then another after the top five. The group from 6-12 is guys that I see playing in the majors, but not being starting-caliber. Most guys after 12 is a pure dart-throw, but there is a reason I put guys in the order I did.

That run from 13-16 is verryyyy interesting to me. Pomares is an excellent athlete. Rincones is a pure hitter. Toribio is massive and has ton of pop. Doval is filthy when he's in command. These four guys are flying well under the radar right now, but have the tools to jump the group ahead of them into the 'B' tier with Canario and Santos.

Nice list, but, have you already given up on playing Garcia at catcher?

With Bart blocking him at catcher, thought about shifting him to 3B but then Posey is there too soooo

From a more 'national' perspective (I guess) I like this list. A lot of times like this it seems guys are being picked out of a hat. But I think that was solidly put together, even if they did lean a bit on the pedigree factor towards the back end. But frankly you get past the top three and you could have hundreds of differing opinions.

The latter. Someone asked them
I think that is bs. They have Victor Victor Mesa rated at the Marlins top prospect.

They just forgot about Luciano when they put the Giants list together.

I just saw the same thing and wondered that TBH. I'll dig up what I saw but yeah no Luciano but yes Victor Victor? Pretty egregious.

Here's the MLB.com top 30 for the Giants.

I like this list a lot, really puts the spotlight on some of the Dominican players the Giants have. There's a lot of excitement over Toribio, which I think is warranted.

As I recall, Doval got lit up in his first week at Augusta, and was essentially unhittable after that. Alas, giving up 7 earned runs in less than an inning can really screw up your stats.

Joey Bart, Heliot Ramos enter 2019 as Giants' top prospects

The top prospect, Bart, will remain in the spotlight throughout his minor league career, but he feels one of his teammates from the 2018 short-season Salem-Keizer club is significantly overlooked. The Giants’ 2018 11th round pick David Villar (unranked) tied Bart for the team-lead with 13 home runs last summer, but Villar produced 10 more doubles, finishing with 23 in just 62 games.

“He was a steal, man,” Bart said. “I always mess with him. I don’t know how he was an 11th round pick. He crushes and he plays great defense. He’s not like 6-foot-3 so that’s the only thing I can think of that they’re holding against him. He rakes.

I like the sound of that!

I love Doval. He's filthy and if he gets consistent he could be dominant

I love Villar too. I agree with Bart here, I think Villar is really unheralded.

Toribilo is my top 3rd baseman, but Villar is number two, and Gonzalez is three.
