I know this is pre-season and all but this team looks rough.
Texan's QB's are just sitting back with 5-7 second to look around and throw.
I haven't ever seen one negative or break even play from the defense yet. They just give up 3-4 yards every play, other than Webb's terrible incompletions.

The passing attack looks like a poor man's version of Cooter's playbook.
It just started recording the game at 1:00 AM tonight. Seen the first series... Texans score on the opening drive and the Lions gave up field position. I believe I'll be heading to bed, it isn't wroth losing sleep to watch this crap. I'm just wondering if you didn't see Rod Marinelli under that hoody.

Stafford better be hurt. Because there's no excuse for holding your QB out of preseason when you're installing & learning a brand new offense. You're throwing the first half of your season away be doing this. Your QB needs live reps. There WILL be growing pains, and to not get some of them out of the way now is asinine.

I wonder if that back injury he suffered last season is still lingering this year. All reports I've read, regarding practices, he's been wildly inconsistent. Is it more likely they're withholding his pre-season game reps so as to give more time to heal and not cause further injury ? idk.

I totally agree with your assessment in his need for live reps, against other teams, with the new offensive scheme slowly being introduced.

A'Shawn looked fat, out of shape and slow as hell from the very limited clips I've seen. He rarely got any type of push and struggled to contain blocks. Imo, he's not in the best predicament to make this teams final roster and if he does make the final roster, he hasn't earned an extension. He's only a viable DL when he's had Ngata or Snacks beside him.

watching that highlight clip that stomp posted, you can see the play action worked pretty good and that was when Fales was in at QB. ZZ had good vision and cutting ability and a couple decent chip blocks on the night.

The WR corps, as a whole, didn't impress me at all.

The 1st team OL played significantly better this week but they had only 14 snaps together as a unit. Decker and Wagner were pulled after that. OT Donnal is not the answer as a backup/swing OT, imo.

BQ needs to be in the hunt for another OT as that backup/swing OT before the regular season begins.

I don't think much has changed for the Lions. They've scored all their points(3) in the 4th quarter for that forth quarter heroic come back. During the Super Bowl era the Lions have a Head Coaching graveyard(none of them ever went on to become an NFL head coach elsewhere). Seeing how the Lions were man handled I couldn't help but to bring a flash from the past...

LOL. You weren't alive at the time this occurred.

Lions are 5 pt. underdogs to the crappy Texans. Embarrassing.

-5 is a huge spread for preseason, and it's the largest spread so far this year. Guess that's what losing 31-3 gets ya.

Crappy? You mean the team that went 11-5 (Same record as the team that won the superbowl) last year and won their division?

4 things I learned from the Lions preseason loss to the Texans

Will Harris is Jabrill Peppers
Okay, so he’s not as polished or as big as Peppers when he was a rookie in Cleveland. And in scooping and scoring on a fumble recovery to give the Lions their first preseason touchdown, he showed a little more playmaking panache than the young Peppers did. I’m more referring to style of play and how Harris should be deployed in the defense.

Throughout camp, Harris showed an almost freakish lack of route awareness in deep coverage. As a high safety in 2-deep coverage or when tasked with multiple receivers in his cone of responsibility, Harris consistently failed to react until it was too late. I saw those exact same issues with Peppers in Browns camp back in 2017, and at Michigan before that.

Peppers improved emphatically in his second season when he was moved up in the formation. He played a lot of hybrid S/LB and handled slot coverage on TEs who flexed out, and he did it pretty well. It also left Peppers in position to make an impact in the run game and to be around the ball more with his speed in the short passing game.

That’s exactly what I saw from Harris against the Texans. The Lions found him a home he can inhabit as a rookie.

BB_72: He's completely lost when in deep coverage and not much better when he's with 10-12 yards off LOS but he has surprised me against the run or as a secondary valve option for the CB's similar to when he half-assed made the tackle on the TE who face planted Andrew Adams.

4 things I learned from the Lions preseason loss to the Texans

The pass rush was terrifyingly inept.

As bad as the Texans have been at protecting Deshaun Watson (sacked 62 times last year), their O-line completely dominated the Lions defensive front in pass protection. Watson had time to sit on hold with his credit card company before making some throws early in the game. Even on some 5-man rushes, the Lions couldn’t get close.

Coach Patricia wanted to see what Romeo Okwara, Fred Jones (a surprise starter after a good week of practice), P.J. Johnson and Eric Lee could do against the NFL’s worst offensive line. He got his answer, and unfortunately the answer is “nothing” other than two great plays by Okwara working against a third-string tackle who won’t even make a practice squad.

BB_72: that headline was an understatement considering who the DL was going up against.

Beyond the participation, the scheming remains decidedly vanilla compared to what we’ve watched in Allen Park in practices. Without getting into specifics, the variety of formations on offense and the intricacies of the pass rush and coverage that we watched in training camp are far more advanced and prevalent than what we’ve seen against the Patriots and Texans.

It can be frustrating for fans to see such lifeless, unimaginative play from players that fans — and even the broadcast crew — need to reference a roster to identify. Matt Patricia doesn’t care. That’s not important to his preseason plan for his team.
