Can't say that's the news I expected to see when I refreshed twitter.

I think I like this deal. I think Niskanen is better than Gudas, though he's got 2 years @ 5.75 left instead of 1 year @ 3.35.

I think they both have their stregths. Niskanen gets a slight nod at being the better player. i think he fits better in Vigneaults system than Gudas does so i think that may be the reason for the trade.

This is huge!!!! As you know we needed at least 1 player with a cup on his resume.

Yep. I like the Niskanen addition a lot the more that I think about it. Adds the cup winner to a very young back end. That will be invaluable for the young guys.

Plus he's good enough to play on the top pair with Provorov. He's mostly been playing top pair with Carlson in Washington (I think).

I think we traded Gudas at his peak value. He had his best year as a Flyer last season. It wouldve been nice to ship him out west so he cant go head hunting on our guys 5 times a year.

Agree the fact that he is good enough to play top pair with Prov pushes every other d man down a step and makes us much deeper on the back end.

I think the Flyers traded Gudas after one of his better years, and the Caps traded Niskanen after one of his lesser years. If they both revert back to the mean, this is a pretty significant on-ice upgrade.

Even though we got a few years older i think those years of playoff experience will pay off.

Why is Washington only paying $2.35 of Gudas $3.35 salary? Are we picking up the difference?

The Washington Capitals have acquired defenceman Radko Gudas from the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for defeceman Matt Niskanen.

The Flyers retained 30 per cent of Gudas' $3.35 million cap hit on his contract - which runs through next season - in the deal.

Niskanen is signed for two more seasons at a $5.75 million cap hit, meaning the Capitals save $3.41 million on next year's cap in the swap.

I would rather have had that trade straight up without paying the extra on Gudas salary. This makes it a less attractive trade.

Looks like we did the capitals of favor by giving them some cap relief as well. I could see this being a scratch your back now scratch your back later move

There are some big questions raised by this trade...one of them is the cap management aspect of retaining $1mill of Gudas' salary on top of Niskanen's bigger cap hit. That makes that one roster spot over $6 million this coming season.
There is also the loss of sandpaper/grit factor that has been mentioned. The Flyers are simply too easy to play against. Gudas made people keep their heads up and on a swivel. That is going to be missed UNLESS there is something else afoot.

At this moment, I am whelmed. Not over and not under...just whelmed. I think that this is a set up move and I want to see what the other moves involved turn out to be.

Bright side, it is a veteran right shot puck mover who can be a mentor and play top 4 minutes.
