Zunino's 2017 feels like a fluke (and his .355 BABIP was well above his career norm of .272). Still a good defender and pitch framer, but it's hard to see him being much more than an average hitting catcher at this point. Dude has a lifetime K% of 34.2% over 2087 PA now. It was 37% last year. oh yeah, and a career .276 OBP is pretty abysmal (.259 last year).

Mallex probably will see some BABIP regression himself as well, but he has the kind of speed to sustain a good BABIP and his 2018 slash line is somewhat identical to his career minor league line. I'd rather have Mallex going forward.

The Smith/Zunino deal is official. Looks like a win for the Mariners to me.

Yankees just signed former Sox uber prospect Ryan Lavarnway to a minor league deal.

Down38 would be so pleased.

next rays ace:suds:
ays acquired LHP Michael Plassmeyer, C Mike Zunino, and OF Guillermo Heredia from the Mariners for OF Mallex Smith and OF Jake Fraley.

Plassmeyer, a fourth-round pick in 2018 out of the University of Missouri, is far more than a minor throw-in here. The 22-year-old southpaw registered a promising 2.25 ERA, 0.83 WHIP, and 44/4 K/BB ratio over his first 24 professional innings this past season at Low-A Everett. He has the command and swing-and-miss stuff to rise quickly through the Tampa Bay farm system.

Great guy, clubhouse glue and all that happy horseshit, but if he can't get through the 4th inning on a semi-regular basis then I don't see this as a huge boost.

Need to re-sign Happ, lock down Corbin, and try to pry one of those Indian pitchers loose.

I’d like to see if he could come out of the pen. Too talented and battle tested not to be given a roster spot. If he can’t be effective as a starter anymore then gotta find a way to utilize him.

The "Andujar plays in the field" argument would hold some weight if Andujar wasn't so damn bad defensively. You could also argue that he doesn't pitch and Ohtani did.

I really thought andujar would win, especially due to ohtani's injury. The people on that other board are now telling me ohtani was always a lock. Hmmmmmm.

I had a bad feeling when BA named him their ROY. "Japanese Babe Ruth " hype coupled with anti-Yankee bias did make it a lock evidently.

Looking at their stats side by side, it's hard to see any justification, but it wasn't a close vote.

Shohei Ohtani was announced on Monday as the winner of the 2018 American League Rookie of the Year award.

Ohtani wound up easily topping Miguel Andujar, who had a fantastic rookie campaign in his own right. He just couldn't match up with Ohtani's historic dual-threat season, even though it was a bit abbreviated. Ohtani posted a 3.31 ERA and 63/22 K/BB ratio over 51 2/3 innings across 10 starts for the Angels while also batting .285/.361/.564 with 22 home runs and 61 RBI

I guess playing 104 games, pitching and DH'ing was enough.....Maybe they are making up for Matsui not winning......

Right, but back then, all we heard was "Come on, Matsui's not really a rookie"

Funny how the perspective has changed now.

Andujar may not have even been the best rookie on his own team. Torres only had an OPS+ 8 points lower and unlike Andujar, he can actually field his damn position (and a tougher one at that). Torres edged him out in WAR by nearly a win despite playing 26 fewer games. As for Ohtani, his OPS+ was 26 points higher than Andujar (granted with fewer PA) and he threw 51 innings of 3.31 ERA ball.

Ohtani skipped starts (or was held out of starts) against the better offenses in the league. That's a fact. So as good as he may be, his pitching numbers are a bit tarnished in my view. The only elite offenses he pitched against were Boston and Houston, and they both got him pretty good. As I said earlier, he was scheduled to start twice against NY, and was pulled both times.

Andular tied the rookie doubles record, and was the first rookie 3B ever to hit more than 40 doubles and 25 HR. Twelve of Andujar’s 27 home runs either tied the game or put the Yankees ahead. Five of those dingers came in the sixth inning or later, which led the team.

Yankees almost certainly don't make the playoffs without Andujar's contributions, but I'm pretty sure the Angels would've been in the cellar with or without Ohtani.

Ohtani's a great player but I think Andujar would have made a better ROTY for the AL.

Good to see Yankees fans finally found a new defensively inept infielder to overrate after Jeter retired. Lol.
