NFL awards compensatory draft picks to 16 teams

More Columns >
A total of 32 compensatory choices in the 2017 NFL Draft have been awarded to 16 teams, the NFL announced today.

Under the rules for compensatory draft selections, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in the previous year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks.

The compensatory picks will be positioned within the third through seventh rounds based on the value of the compensatory free agents lost.

Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors. The formula was developed by the NFL Management Council. Not every free agent lost or signed by a club is covered by this formula.

The Collective Bargaining Agreement limits the number of compensatory selections to the number of clubs then in the League (32). This year, four clubs: the Los Angeles Rams (one pick), the Green Bay Packers (one pick), the Pittsburgh Steelers (two picks), and the Arizona Cardinals (three picks) qualified for compensatory selections under the net loss formula, but will not receive those picks because the final numerical values of the CFAs who were lost by those clubs ranked 33rd through 39th among the final numerical values of all compensatory selections. Each of those four clubs will receive compensatory selections for other CFAs lost whose final numerical values ranked within the top 32.

Compensatory picks may be traded this year. A rule change approved by clubs in 2015 permits compensatory draft picks to be traded beginning in 2017.

The following 2017 compensatory draft picks have been determined by the NFL Management Council for the 2017 NFL Draft, which will be held on April 27-29 in Philadelphia:

No happy about this at all. In the past they have never counted option years as part of the average of the contract since they are not true years at that moment. The year they decide to do it the Broncos now lose an entire 3rd round pick because Okung canceled out the highest paid FA player in Osweiler this offseason.

Yeah not sure why they decided they needed to make this change at this moment. They did not inform the teams before they did it which is why some teams did those option years in the thought they would be getting some comp picks because of it. The Bronco organization is none too happy right now.

Sounds like a typical NFL screw job.

Okung and Osweiler weren't even in the same zip code in terms of desirability at the start of the season

Yup. I wouldn't be shocked if the Broncos went after the NFL on this one. Teams have gotten comp picks switched before by going to the NFL office and arguing the results.

I'm not doubting you, but some examples would be good.

As a side note: the idea of getting draft picks because of Sean Smith and Chase Daniel is lulz to me.

Its like draft picks from heaven for doing the right thing.

So happy to be right about Sean Smith and the for the Chiefs to get a 3rd round pick out of it. The Jeff Allen/Chase Daniel situation is worth a chuckle too.

It's the Broncos so anytime the league can F with them I'm fine with it. LOL

But all kidding aside, it does sound like the NFL did screw them over... Regardless if the Broncos knew about it or not

Seattle with 5 picks in the first 3 rounds. That should be really helpful. About time we catch a break on the compensatory with every team wanting to snag our players. Perfect that this year we can trade compensatory as well.

No 4th or 5th though :( - hopefully Seattle moves down in the 1st, grabs Obi (Safety) in the early 2nd, grabs an extra 4th.. and then goes crazy on DL, OT, and CB from there on out..

And the Pats get Cleveland's 3rd round compensatory pick from the Jamie Collins deal.
