2016 Season Thread

After week one against BC our defense looked pretty solid. Our offense needs work. We have 1AA Mercer coming up next week so unless our whole team gets food poisoning we will beat the crap out of them. We won't get to see if Paul Johnson can tune up our offense to 2014 levels until our game after that against Vandy. Who is at least reasonable opposition.

I remain cautiously optimistic.

Oh look, we beat Mercer 35-10.

At least the game vs. Vandy should give us some details on how the team is really doing.

Okay. This is definitely looking better than last year!

Okay. We're 3-0. We've already equaled last year's win total so everything after this is an improvement. We've got Clemson coming up on Thursday. At home. We're going to need to play a near perfect game, but I think Clemson is winable.

We definitely did NOT play a near perfect game. On to the next opponent. I still think a 8-4 season is likely.

Next up this week is Miami. They are 3-0 and ranked #14. On the other hand they have played App State, FAU, and FAMU. I think how this games goes will set the tone for the rest of the season. We have home field advantage. If our offense remembers how to block people we can win this. We'll see.

Another loss. Sloppy play. Looks like another loooong season.

Speaking of long seasons, chalk up another loss this time to Pitt. GT drops to 3-3. We are playing for a bowl game now. My season prediction of 8-4 is still theoretically possible but highly doubtful. 6-6 is more likely.

Okay, we stopped the bleeding at least. We beat Georgia Southern. Sad that it has come to looking forward to wins over patsies but we take what we can get I suppose. 4-3 on the season right now. Already 1 more win than last year. We have a bye week and then next up is Duke. I will be at that game. Go Jackets.

Yay we beat Duke. Our defense was deceptively solid in the first half. We gave up a lot of yards but only 7 points. We caused turnovers. The 2nd half started out a comedy of errors. Our offense fumbled giving Duke excellent field position and they scored. Then our kickoff returner fumbled and Duke scored. We went from being up 28-7 to only being up 28-21 in a matter of minutes. We held on and won in the end...which ultimately is all that matters. 5-3 on the season now. Next up UNC. That's going to be a tough game. It's at UNC. I remain hopeful.

UNC did not go well. 5-4 on the season right now. Next game is at Virginia Tech. Win chance at maybe 15%. Still a better season than last year. Still not acceptable.

Okay. That win over Virginia Tech was a very pleasant surprise. We played well on both sides of the ball plus special teams. 6-4. Bowl Eligible. Next up is at home vs a very very bad Virginia team.

I also miss the days when there was more than one active GT fan. This has become more of a diary than a discussion board.

We beat UVA. We were supposed to beat them. But it is nice to actually live up to expectations for a change. We're now 7-4 on the season. 8-4 is....possible. We still have to play UGA. We haven't done well against them in the last 30 years. But winning is....possible.

At this point it is just a matter of waiting to see which bowl game we go to. I kinda hope we play somewhere in Florida so I can go to the game.

Taxslayer aka Gator Bowl in Jax on Dec 31st. I like this. I think Kentucky is beatable too.

And we finish the season with a win. 3-0 vs SEC teams this year. 9-4 on the season with a bowl win. Overall I would call this season a success. Our recruiting class is currently ranked #61 on Rivals but we still have a lot of available spots for scholarships. If we can finish in the top 30 in recruiting that too would be awesome.

Since Jan 2, our recruiting class has jumped from #61 to #38. Mostly because several players transferred out and we were able to add more recruits in. This is probably going to be our largest recruiting class in years. We will probably wind up at about #30 by signing day.
