If Nadal’s quarter seems tougher, it’s largely because his first-round pairing jumps out at you. He’s going to meet the great Australian hope (and, sometimes, dope), Bernard Tomic. Forget all the controversy about Tomic and his wacky father. Apart from anything else -- including the hype this match will generate Down Under -- Tomic always lifts his game at home. He’s a tricky, shifty player, and he probably wants to win back some of the fans he’s lost with his antics.

A third-round rematch with Gael Monfils (whom Nadal beat in a three-set final in the Doha final last Sunday) is no gimme, either, and Nadal’s projected fourth-round opponent is a tough out, No. 16 seed Kei Nishikori. If nothing else, the draw will certainly leave Nadal broken in for a potentially grueling quarterfinal battle with No. 5 seed Juan Martin del Potro.

Moving into the second quarter of the draw, Roger Federer may be down to No. 6 in the rankings, but the way they now do the draw, he’s ensconced in the slot that once was reserved for either the No. 3 or 4 seed (this year, David Ferrer and Andy Murray respectively) -- the very bottom of the top half.

Murray appears to have little to worry about until a fourth-round meeting with No. 13 John Isner (Murray could get a qualifier in both the second and third rounds). By contrast, Federer in that quarter might have to survive former finalist and No. 10 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or former semifinalist Marin Cilic, to make a projected date with Murray in the quarters.

That third quarter will be an interesting one, stocked as it is with unpredictable, but dangerous players like No. 20 Jerzy Janowicz and No. 14 Mikhail Youzhny, flashy Alexandr Dolgopolov, No. 12 and former semifinalist Tommy Haas and power servers Ivo Karlovic and Kevin Anderson. If this tournament is going to have a surprise semifinalist, he’s likely to come out of that section of the draw.

Very few players are going to outmaneuver, outrun or outrally Djokovic on the courts at Melbourne Park -- or anywhere else. But Djokovic’s quarter of the draw (as No. 2 seed, he’s at the very bottom) contains a number of men who could conceivably outhit him -- especially if the courts are playing as fast as early reports suggest.

Djokovic could meet Dmitry Tursunov in the third round. Tursunov is an unpredictable, electric shot-maker and he’s playing well. After that, Djokovic could run into one of two other explosive players in his quarter: mercurial Ernests Gulbis or Sam Querrey. And that’s before he even gets to the quarterfinal, where he could meet either Richard Gasquet or (on form) No. 8 seed Stan Wawrinka -- two more guys who rely on fearless and powerful groundstrokes.

Remember, Wawrinka challenged Djokovic in the fourth round in Melbourne last year, and that one turned into an epic, and according to some, the best match of 2013. Djokovic finally won it 12-10 in the fifth, but Wawrinka was No. 17 at the time. He’s a player of a different class -- and ranking -- now.

So though we may not be dropping household names here, nobody in his right mind would call Djokovic’s dance card an easy one. The truth is that if Nadal and Djokovic hope to meet in yet another dream Grand Slam final, they must be prepared to jump through comparably hazardous hoops to make it happen.

Anyway as far as the schedule goes tmr it will be Kerber, Ferrer, and Stosur on Laver in the day session with Novak and Serena having the night session.

The best match in the day session IMO will be on Margaret Court at 11 AM which is when unseeded Venus will take on Makarova

MELBOURNE, Australia -- Australian Davis Cup captain Pat Rafter and Lleyton Hewitt have entered the doubles competition at the Australian Open as a wild-card entry, with both players saying they're planning to have "a bit of fun."

Predictions:

MEN's Draw:

Nadal's Quarter:

Nadal-Del Potro QF: Nadal wins most of them. Nadal is also better on hard courts now than in 2009, when Del Potro won most of them.

Del Potro also hasn't gotten past the QF here, and has never made a great run IMO. Doesn't mean it can't happen, but that he hasn't done it yet.

I think Nadal in 4.

Murray's Quarter:

Murray-Isner 4th round: I always wish Isner would do better here, maybe this will be the year. I don't think I've seen this matchup before. I look forward to it then. Isner has to come forward more. I'll be optimistic for a good match and say Murray in 4.

I think Murray is going to win the AO one year tough, you can't get to 3 Finals and not eventually win it, right?

Federer-Verdasco 3rd round: I don't know the impact FED's new racquet and coach will have yet, so that's a wildcard.

I'd like FED to have an easy win against a good player, but FED has to show he can have an easy win first, before I believe in him again.

I'll say this goes the distance, FED in 5, although I'd like a 3 set win.

Tsonga-Simon 3rd round: Cilic might not get past Granollers or Simon in the 1st two rounds. Cilic has been a scrub in recent years. So I picked Simon over Cilic in the 2nd round.

Now as for Tsonga-Simon, I'd like to see how the two styles are in this matchup. Tsonga is the better player, but this has the potential to be a good 5 setter.

Tsonga in 4.

Tsonga-Federer 4th round: Have to give the edge to Tsonga now until FED proves otherwise. Tsonga in 3.

Tsonga-Murray QF: Tsonga has beaten him before here, although that was in 2008. I think they match up better on grass, where the points are shorter. Murray is the better hardcourt player. But Murray is coming off of injury. But so is Tsonga, he's only been back for a few months.

I guess I'll go with Murray in 3, just have a feeling that neither will be playing their best.

Ferrer's Quarter:

I'd like to see a Berdych-Haas 4th round. I'll pick Berdych to come out of this quarter.

Djokovic's Quarter:

A Gasquet-Davydenko 2nd round match could be interesting. I'll pick Gasquet in 3, but hope for a good match.

Gasquet-Wawrinka 4th round: I'll take Wawrinka in 3, just too much offense and quick power. But sylistically, should be a fun match.

Djokovic-Wawrinka QF: The dream is for Wawrinka to finally win one of these. I hate seeing someone come close but not win one.

Djokovic has a 15-2 H2H record.

I'll pick Wawrinka in 4, even though my head tells me not to.

Nadal-Murray SF: It's hard to get against Nadal after his hard court season last year. Nadal in 3.

Berdych-Wawrinka SF: I have no idea what to expect from this one. Wawrinka is a more complete player. Berdych can get into a rut where his shots are too long.

I'll pick Wawrinka in 3.

Nadal-Wawrinka Finals: This matchup has rarely been competitive. I'd hate for Wawrinka to get this far, only to get blown out, but that's what I see coming. It's got to be disheartening if he does get blown out.

Nadal in 3.

Women's Draw:

Serena's Quarter:

Ivanovic-Stosur 3rd round: Stosur looks like she's on the downside of her career. Ivanovic in 2.

Serena-Ivanovic 4th round: Bad matchup, Ivanovic doesn't have the offense anymore. Serena in 2.

Serena will get through to the QF.

Li's Quarter: To some extent like with Wawrinka, I'd hate for Li to come close to winning a big match deep in a major, but not win, the past few years.

A Li-Lisicki 4th round has potential to be a good power match, but I think Li will still get through.

Sharapova's Quarter:

This quarter looks boring. Sharapova to the QF.

Azarenka's Quarter:

I'd like to see an Azarenka-Kuznetsova 4th round, but even if it happened, I wouldn't have faith for Kuznetsova to make it a good match at this point in Kuznetsova's career.

Wozniacki is in this quarter, but she's been a scrub since the 2012 AO.

Azarenka should get to the QF.

Serena - Li SF: While Serena blew Li out at the 2013 USO, I like the way these players match up in general. They've had great matches here:

2013 CINCINNATI Cincinnati, USA S HARD Serena Williams 7-5 7-5

2010 AUSTRALIAN OPEN MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA S HARD Serena Williams 7-6 (4) 7-6 (1)

2010 WIMBLEDON WIMBLEDON, GREAT BRITAIN Q GRASS Serena Williams 7-5 6-3

Li probably blew a great opportunity to win another major at the 2013 USO.

And I feel that age is going to catch up to her soon.

So I don't know if this one will be competitive. We will see as the tourney progresses, as to Li's form.

Serena in 2, uncompetitive sets.

Sharapova-Azarenka SF: Azarenka is the more compete player, she's better at rallies. Azarenka in 2, with one blowout set.

Serena - Azarenka Finals: To me, while some of their matches have gone 3 sets, I still feel like Serena leads most of the time, then Azarenka might come and win the 2nd set late in the 2nd set. I don't feel like Azarenka starts out strong, and wins the 1st set.

So while Azarenka has the talent to win, she doesn't lead for enough times, or have many easy sets, for this to make this a 50/50 match.

Serena in 2 is the most likely result.

Serena will probably drop a set somewhere in the tourney, but based on the matchups (or due to Li's pending decline), it's most likely going to be an early round set that she drops, rather than a late round match.

people keep talking about nadal vs tomic in round 1

i think tomic might be able to keep it close for a set or two, and maybe even win 1. after that, though, rafa runaway.

murray with a tougher road to the final than nole after taking half of the last season off. if murray happens to make the final, he'll probably be on court quite a lot more than nole, so i like nole's chances.

I agree about Nadal/Tomic

I'll be shock if Tomic even takes 1 set. Maybe he takes one of the set to a tiebreak

also, when wawrinka is on, he can beat just about anybody.

but he has some tough matchups before the 2nd week. Robredo has DOMINATED stan. and the faster the surface, the harder time he'll have against gasquet.

I don't have DTV so I may watch those matches on ESPN3.

How about Venus Williams?

Haha, Isner has never done that well here, so you might be right. Still, would like to see him make a decent run here.

If Murray can get to the Finals, I don't think being on the court for longer than his opponent, will matter as much. I don't think rest matters as much, when you're in the prime of one's career, and playing well.

If he can get that far, then he's probably playing in great form, IMO. and will have likely beaten Nadal too.

Especially at the AO, I think I've seen that just because one may have the earlier day SF, doesn't mean that it plays that much of a role in the Finals.

Same here but these guys absolutely suck in GS since A-Rod retired
