Only offseason activity I am worried about now is signing the Captain to a long term deal before July 1.

Oates is the new coach of the Caps..always liked him. Hope we can get another good PP guy in here.

Oates is out? darn... he got some potential down there.

I wonder if we would pull off any trades?

I'm shock to hear nothing else on Kovy too...

Was never a fan of Oates here. At first I was thrilled, but we are mediocre at best on the PP and we suck at faceoffs, so really what does he do? The forecheck is PDB's doing so can't credit him for that.

Sign Parise and it's a great offseason.

Yea, Oates is gone, and now Robinson might retire.
I am a bit surprised by both news today.
Oates doesn't have any prior head coaching experience. He is a players coach, so that must be the direction they wanted in Washington.
Parise did speak highly about Oates today.

As for Parise, he confirmed that Lou and his agents are talking. He mentioned today in the interview the words "we" and "us" a few times as if he is still on the team, so that is promising.

Absolute Latest on the Captains Contract

Fire & Ice - Parise and Devils talking contract as free agent deadline approaches

Also: They just interviewed him on Home Ice about Oates, and they brought up the contract.

They pushed him by asking him if he had a list of teams that he thought would be great to play for. Shot that down entirely, said he was in communications with his agent and Lou and hoped they could get something done. Sounded very optimistic.

Oh shit, Eck now saying a Parise extension with Devils more and more likely. Hope he's actually right for once

All the "I can't talk about it now" in TG's blog makes me feel like he and Lolu are making progress and neither want anything leaked until its done. Come on Zach, stay in NJ and win us some Cups!!!

The Parise news seems positive. As for both assistants leaving, while a lot of change can be bad, it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to have PDB bring in some of his guys.

I'm 50/50 on Oates. Our PP seemed a bit too easy to defend sometimes despite finishing up in the middle of the pack (way better than normal the Devils for sure!) However, Parise has had a huge decline in PP production under him, as have quite a few other players. He did turn Zajac into a beast in the faceoff dot though.

More on Parise from Chere:

Zach Parise: Devils aren't out if I become unrestricted free agent Sunday | NJ.com

On potentially becoming a free agent:

“If that does happen, my agents have done a really good job of doing the best they can to prepare me for it. But first and foremost, we want to try to get things worked out with New Jersey,” the 27-year-old left winger told The

Parise said even if he becomes unrestricted, it does not mean he has ruled out staying with the Devils.

“Not at all. I’m sure a lot of people will think that, but that’s very far from the case,” he said. “If it does happen to get to Sunday, that’s by no means saying I don’t want to go back to New Jersey.

“I know the perception would be, ‘Oh, he wants out.’ But that’s not the case. I haven’t been lying. I’ve said all along how much I like playing in New Jersey. So that wouldn’t be me saying, ‘I don’t want to play there anymore.’ ”

We have a truckload of cap space.

This is the best cap site on earth: CapGeek.com :: It's a numbers game :: NHL :: Salary Cap Chart

There's even a cap calculator that let's you put in your own numbers for free agents.

Here's a mock lineup that I just threw together with what I think will be a good base for our 20 man roster.

As you can see below, we still need to add a few depth players. Devils will need to decided if they keep Bryce, but since they've postured themselves as committed to Fayne, I don't think they will.

-- So assuming a $5M commitment to goal and a very high $8M to Zach, you've still got something like $12M to spend on the extras plus anyone else you want as a FA.

--Note: Fayne's contract will actually be much higher than listed below. Prob around $2M

Is Zidlicky signed on for the next season or is he a FA?

Bringing in a new guy(along with Parise of course), Garrison also has my attention.

Zidlicky is signed for one more year.
Problem with Garrison is lot of teams are talking about him. He also wants multi-year and I am hearing 4-5 million per season.
If he doesn't resign with Florida, there might be a bidding war for him.
That kind of money is a lot for a guy who has really only 1 productive season.

WTF is up with all this talk of signing Parise and trading Kovy?? Thought there was a buyer lined up, a guy who was already set to perform a hostile takeover if beek defaulted??
