I have full confidence that Dougie will fuck up this draft like he's always done.

Consistent(ly shitty) at teh drafting is his middle name.

rares, really? cooch was shitty? demers in the 7th round was shitty? landing petrecki at 28th at the time was masterful (didnt work out just yet but still, petrecki was rated in the teens).

dougie hasnt been spectacular (see bernier over parise or trading up to pick seto over kopitar), but he certianly hasnt fucked up consistently at the draft. Aside from '03, he hasnt had a top 10 pick to play with and aside from the '05 lottery, he hasnt had a top 20 pick that didnt come by trade. That's not a whole lot of cards to be dealt and its because the sharks have been consistently in the top 10 in the league during the season.

I would love the sharks to pick a premier, franchise player, but maybe cooch was the pick, and remember that dougie traded up to land him and that pick was a direct fruit of trading a back up goaltender (toskala).

Last year, I was mad that dougie passed on etem, but no one can pass judgement on a draft until at least 3 to 4 years out. Coyle looks good and freddie hamilton looks pretty good as well as a 5th round pick.

TSN has an interesting article about how they would draft now a year out from 2010 or two years out from 2009. Says that if they could do the 2010 draft over again, they would select coyle 16th (up 12 spots from the actual pick), which would represent the best draft improvement outside of jarred tinordi at 8th (up 14 spots from the actual pick at 22nd). In fact, it says that if done over, they would put etem at 22nd (still up 7 spots from his real selection, but now 6 spots behind coyle)... Still obviously too early to tell, but the TSN guys think dougie really hit the nail with coyle.

It's a pretty good article but I think the reasons for some of their rankings are flawed.

I was on the fence with Coyle when he was picked but have been sold on the kid since watching the WJ tryout camp and WJC's.

See? That's what I meant with Dougie draft picks... He just drafts them to give them away (see Seto+Coyle for Burns)...

So who really gives a shit who he drafts in the first place?

If SJ can extend Burns at a decent hit, that's not a TERRIBLE trade. Seems like an overpayment to me though... Either the pick swap or throwing Coyle in seems right, but not both.

Nieto is supposed to be pretty good. He's a little small, but had a solid freshman year... gotta love those boston players!

^had two less points than coyle. Nieto is around the same size as Seto if he can bulk up a bit.
