I think the White Sox are gonna pull it off despite the rumors that they might have been paid to lose.
Ha, here was some real early evidence that the Tribune guy noticed and said, 'hey, this is sort of weird." The first day of the series.
The writers spent a lot of time in those days discussing the 'dope' which was always about the odds. Everybody bet on the games. It's just what sports fans did.

Funny thing I saw on one of these searches was at the end of the season, the Pirates were still playing -- they were barnstorming in the tiny town of Lawrenceville, IND. I have been to Lawrenceville many times. Population about 120. Gotta wonder in 1919 what a traveling big-league team was going to draw.
