So we traded a clubhouse leader, at a position that we didn't (and really still don't) have a good backup plan for, that was a 2.5 to 4 WAR player for a 30 year-old backup (at best) C and a 25 year-old reliever that can't even make the ML ball club? That's such a Mariners' trade, I can't even...
To be clear, my opinion of him is not based on his fantasy value; I watched a lot of him over the past 2 years because of fantasy. I think he has much more going for him than the "he's just an RB playing QB" bullshit that some people like to spout, largely based on how obvious it is, when...
Yes, IMO, Howell's a career backup. Fields could absolutely be a star; he could also continue to underperform and be shit, but I've paid a lot of attention to him (due to fantasy purposes) and the idea that he can't process the field and is horribly inaccurate is just flat wrong. Give him a...
I'm going to assume that you've watched much less of Fields than I have. His OL's relative talent level his entire time in tge league has been 2 digits, starting with a 3 and he only had a competent receiver starting last year (and that receiver had a career year). We've already seen the best...
You'd rather have Howell (zero upside) than Fields (still has immense upside... he's been in the worst QB situation in the league, since he's been in the league)? I would have been happy to give up 3+Geno, but I get not liking that, but rather taking the Howell trade than the Fields trade is...
Who here would rather we gave up what we did for Howell vs. Giving up our 4th, 5th or a conditional 6th, next year for Fields?
I've been giving my bear fan friend shit all offseason about us giving them Geno and a 3rd for Fields, and he scoffed at it (to be fair, neither of us have any faith...
Calling him "slow-footed" would imply you haven't watched him play. He's much more athletic than his running numbers show because he's always looking to make the play through the air. When he needs to run, he's got wheels and elusiveness.
I think the rules have changed, but it used to be that an amateur draft pick couldn't be traded until something like a full year after either the draft or when he signed his contract. There are probably still similar rules in place.
PTBNL used to (usually) mean that the player (or player pool) that they want in the trade isn't technically eligible to be traded, yet. Trade gets completed (and announced) once they are eligible.
To me there is a difference in drafting a guy (highly) that you can sit and let learn as a luxury instead of a necessity (which I think we both think is the case with McCarthy). I don't like the idea of a 1st round pick being a huge project that is even less likely to pan out than the average...
Yeah, tough to take a lot away from a highlight reel. He made a lot of nice plays, but even his best looking throw wasn't quite as good as Penix's average throw (just the arm strength/way the ball comes off their hands, not that he wasn't occasionally throwing into tight windows with great...
I'll add that Williams would scare the hell out of me (if my team were drafting him where you would need to draft him). So much "smoke" about character issues (not "he's a bad guy" character issues... more "he's a massive prima donna" character issues) and learning how much trouble he's had...
I'll admit not a lot. Parts of a few other than the title game, plus highlights... just nothing "jumped off the page" at me. I've only seen a slight bit more of Williams, Nix and Daniels and all 3 just notably look like they have better NFL skills than McCarthy to me. I have seen basically none...
My opinion: I really like Penix and I think he could be a star in the NFL, but I am given pause by the times I saw him struggle under pressure. I think he can overcome that and his other attributes (incredibly strong arm, deadly accurate, reads the field well (when not pressured) are great...
Exactly as you stated it, and it is grossly incorrect. I mean, even in his (arguably) worst game, he did this, where he watched his 1st option get held, pointed it out, then threw a TD to his 2nd (or 3rd?) option... and he was even under pressure on this one:
Edit: Sorry, this is how you...
You are mixing criticisms, here. The idea that Penix only ever went to his 1st option last year (or the year prior) is, frankly, fucking insane. He had the best OL in college football, which gave him (most of the time) plenty of time to go through progressions, which was a big reason for his...
I'm with you here, in that it feels like a lot to give up and (to me) like JD got absolutely fleeced.
I'd never heard of him before yesterday, but Santos' numbers in the majors don't look like something you'd want to count on in leverage situations (1.3 WHIP out of a reliever seems like it...
Mariners did this with Evan White; worked out fuckin' great
