Overreactions of the day: [Checks the standings] Hmmm, five-way tie in the AL East... even if it's just for a day. When will Davis get his first hit this year?

Typical anti-Baltimore bias, I guess? Look, we all know that Baltimore City has serious systematic issues... but to suggest that the Orioles are no longer economic viable as an organization because of that (and therefore needs to move, etc.) is simply going too far. Fixed it for you (as much...

There's another factor to consider: In a "deep rebuild" situation like this, it might actually make sense to get 17-year-old prospects as opposed to 22-year-olds. Why? Because the organization may be 3-5 years away from being ready to contend again, and the talents of prospects who peak "too...

To beat a dead horse, this is another reason to use Davis as a reverse Shohei Ohtani when the game is out of reach. After all, you could DH for Davis only if he's pitching (per Rule 5.11).

Hence my semi-serious suggestion about converting Davis to pitcher when he's unable to hit... after all, you would still run out of relievers at some point even with liberal usage of the Norfolk / Bowie shuttle.

Overreaction of the weekend: Looks like the "relay team" approach for handling the pitching staff has been working so far? (Granted, n = 3 is a tiny sample size... but I'll take it as a proof of concept.)

Modest proposal of the day: If the Orioles organization simply isn't willing to eat Davis' contract, why not use him as a reverse Shohei Ohtani? In other words, Davis could be the designated mop-up reliever in games where he's not in the batting lineup: In case of a blowout, he would be asked...

From "Would occasional use of an opener work for the Orioles?": Maybe it's just me, but I wonder if going the other extreme would make more for the Orioles organization in 2019? In other words: Why not go with a "no rotation" strategy where every game is handled with a relay team of pitchers...

On the bright side, Buck's contract will be up after the 2018 season... based on his history with the Diamondbacks and the Yankees, that would guarantee winning the World Series in 2019. (/s)

I wouldn't mind if the Orioles actually achieve a massive turnaround and reach the postseason... but realistically speaking, that's not going to happen, and my main concern is that this team could theoretically get to 0.500 from a hot streak and then stay there as a result of "regression to the...

As terrible as this may sound: "Be careful what you wish for." After all, the danger with reaching 0.500 by mid-season is that the front office would most likely be deluded into thinking that they could contend for a wild card spot again. The only way to force them to focus on the rebuild...

Exactly my point... that's why it makes sense to trade everyone on the 25-man roster--including Bundy--before their value starts dropping further. (Seriously, though: That's Bundy's 3rd consecutive bad game. Considering that it's only May, fatigue is unlikely to be an explanation; you have to...

At this point, this team is probably bad enough to get the #1 pick without even trying. So, they might as well apply the "all or nothing" approach and try to maximize future value by unloading the entire 25-man roster. (Yes, that means even trading Bundy if a fair offer is available. Note that...

You could make an argument for trading Machado ASAP: Currently, he's the most valuable player of the 2018 Orioles from the standpoint of Fangraphs WAR (1.9; in distant 2nd is Bundy at 0.9) Even assuming some regression to the mean, it is conceivable that removing Machado for 4/5ths of a...

At some point, you have to wonder if it would make sense to apply the baseball equivalent of the "Suck for Luck" strategy (i.e. just tank the season intentionally and go for the #1 pick). Granted, it doesn't work quite as well in the MLB since prospects take longer to develop, and the net...

    1. Right now, Bundy is this team's ace, Cashner is the #2 starter, and the rest of the rotation is below replacement level. 2. To be fair, both Davis and Tillman have been extremely unlucky this season so far from the standpoint of BABIP (0.182 vs. a career average of 0.311 for Davis, and...
